The Argentine Naval Air Force ordered in 1979 a total of fourteen Super Étendards (SUE) to replace most of the outdated A-4B Skyhawks aboard of the carrier “ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (V-2)”, which started receiving the first five of those in 1981, alongside five anti-ship AM39 Exocet missiles, and assigned to Segunda Escuadrilla Aeronaval de Caza y Ataque (Second Naval Attack Squadron).

WAR BETWEEN ARGENTINA AND UNITED KINGDOM

On April 2nd 1982, war with the United Kingdom broke out and the Super Etendards were deployed in continental Argentina, due to possible attacks to the aircraftcarrier, being retired from combat after to the sinking of ARA General Belgrano cruiser on May 2nd.

The Super Etendard (SUE 202 - 203) took part of the first Exocet attack on the 4th of May against the destroyer HMS Sheffield, which one of the two missiles fired hit the ship, starting a fire that left the ship out of combat and rapidly sunk.

This was the first time in history an anti-ship missile was ever used in combat.

The second attack was carried out on May 25th against the cargo ship SS Atlantic Conveyor used for transport of Harrier GR.3s and Sea Harriers (moved to HMS Hermes before the attack), helicopters, food and ammunitions. Both missiles fired hit the ship and was abandoned and left to sink in the following days.
