Yeah, by the text it that it wasnt India who left the project, but Sukhoi because of Indian HAL were providing technical documentation of 101KC “Atoll” to BAE Systems

Isn’t the R-77 supposed to be better than the R-27EA. I mean why research, develop and manufacture a new missile instead of just putting the active seeker in the R-27 if the R-77 is going to be inferior.
Obviously the R-77 is more maneuverable but the less drag at supersonic and sub sonic speeds should give it somewhat comparable range.
Was the R-77 just cheaper to produce?

R-77 was far cheaper, less complex, easier to maintain, and faster to produce. Any other reasons necessary?
Okay, in that case, you can carry more of them, they have higher precision due to the grid fins, more modern laser and radio based proximity fuses and warheads, as well as better off-boresight performance.

Similar issues hit the tank fleet, the T-90 was named to suggest that they made a new tank and to hide the fact that it was an upgraded T-72B (1989). The tank was losing its’ value in the export market and it surely lost a lot of reputation after 1991.

no. The R-27EA was canceled in favor of the R-77. The R-27EA/ER is a very heavy 353kg missile against 175. The R-77 appeared as a response to the American AMRAAM. Potentially, the P-77 could accept more carriers and they could also be placed more, because the load on the supply point was less
