Sukhoi Su-27/30/33/35/37 Flanker series & Su-34 Fullback - History, Design, Performance & Dissection

Totally irrelevant to what is being discussed. It is my understanding that the Su-27SM’s that received the specific engine we see in the game is the Su-27SM(3), if the designation is not officially “SM3” or similar, it should at least follow the same naming system used on other fighters such as MiG-9 and MiG-9/(Late) - which is also used for the F-14.

You might say there is not an early version of the Su-27SM in-game to warrant this, but the same question could be posed towards the F-14A which has no late model in the game currently.

If they did and saw no other upgrades I was unaware and obviously makes my statement meaningless, but I have not seen a source to back that up. If they didn’t receive the engine and only the ‘SM3’ did, I’d say we need to either revert the change or correct the other missing features.

It is very relevant as you claim a name change, go make a suggestion if you wish for that. Add along F-15E(late), F-16C(late), and all other aircraft that have an upgrade they received later down in their life

If it has the improved engines it should also get the other improvements that came with them, no?
Applies to both, so if the F-15E has it’s own problems that isn’t relevant to the Su-27. Everything should be held to the same standard but this is the Su-27 thread.

The only improvement that came with the engines is the engines. Also you shouldn’t bring up MiG-9 in the Su-27 thread either.

Nice.

On the topic of Su-30SM’s multirole capability, what sort of air to ground capability will the aircraft have? Can it equip targeting pod?

Iam not sure but it is probably able to carry the kh38

I found this image floating around referring to the loadout of the Su-30MK, but unsure how accurate it is because the drawing seems to show an early Su-27 with the center IRST

There’s also this:

Targeting pod capability would also be great (according to this thread, it may have capability for Saspan-E?), and maybe USSR tree will get its first top tier multirole with all the bells and whistles.

Depends on which one, I really doubt it gets much better than Su34, cause that thing is already destructive enough, even Su25SM3 is insanely good. I really don’t think it changes that much in GRB, neither in ARB as it will come with all the other AESA planes, as well as the fact that R77 will still suck the same.

I use CAS a lot in GRB, so more multirole aircraft being capable of doing more is welcome.
Currently, USSR top tier aircraft is usually missing one or more features that’s standard in Western aircraft, such as thermals targeting pod, high CM count, avionic capability, etc on an airframe that can dogfight well.

I love the Su-34 and I use the Kh-38s as an ad hoc targeting pod but I find myself getting intercepted and losing out to F-16s, Gripens, Rafales, EFs, and more because it’s… obviously a strike aircraft. I can spawn in a Mig-29SMT or Su-27SM as a multirole but then I’d lose out on my ordinance and visual capabilities against ground targets. Meanwhile, other top tier Western aircraft basically can get decent x4-6 A2G missiles, be able to stand on its own in a dogfight, come with a great targeting pod, great avionics, and still have good A2A missiles to boot… in one single package.
It’d be nice if something came along for USSR tree that basically had everything in one, to which I’m hoping the Su-30SM will fill that hole.

I mean, we already had MiG-29SMT and Su-27SM with Kh-29TD

See: with all the bells and whistles.

Western fighter aircraft the past year or so have had much more capability to multirole compared to USSR top tier for quite some time while retaining a very capable FM/avionics/payload/etc. The only thing I’ve seen on Soviet/Russian fighter aircraft that’s just about better is… range (which also isn’t usable at night because the missiles are TV seeker) on their A2G missiles and that’s about it.
We can talk about the Su-34 but I consider that to be more of a strike aircraft than a fighter, and it lacks some of the nicer fighter features like a targeting pod, HMD, FM, etc to make it easily capable of fending off for itself against other fighters.

Like I said, it would be nice if the Su-30SM had basically the equivalent of, say an F-16C or a Gripen in terms of multirole, but I’m not sure how capable it would be hence why I was asking what it could theoretically get.

Supposedly that’s the su-30sm loadout, it can carry good stuff

some people say that “multirole” is a marketing-focused definition, and that “fighter-bomber” is more accurate. in that sense, USSR tech tree already has at least one multirole jet.

What optical pods can the Su-30SM carry?

One thing they need to fix is the totally fake engine SFC (make it dynamic) on all jets. If they fix it, people will need to take full internal to even have 5 minutes play time.

Su-30sm basically confirmed together with the f18
