Su-33 can be equipped with Zhuk-ITU radar with 85 degree gimbal range, same radar as MiG-29SMT.
In theory, it is possible to use R-77 on this airframe if it was provided the upgrade.

I mean it’s ok, like i said i’d be totally fine with them adding any plane just for the sake of it. The problem is that it’s December, we got used to get in December new cool shit, su-33 is like march update material or something like that you know? Not to mention the stuff that european countries got, the gap between EFT/Rafale and the su-33 is kinda big…

It’s crazier when you think that indeed there were far better options for them to add instead of the 33, the update isn’t even going to be focused on naval aircraft like we previously thought. Imagine if we got the mig29m instead, just imagine…

If we exclude the nations that literally haven’t gotten anything and just look at the nations that have gotten new planes, Russia’s been at the bottom of the pile since the OG Su-27 was added.

Not only that but also we shouldn’t keep justifying gaijin’s actions “uhhh but months ago X nation was dominating” so what? I’ve been saying this since the addition of the f-14A, why should we accept this toxic cycle?
Personally I think that the reason why Gaijin is dragging their heels is that they simply wanted to nickle and dime us with as many flanker variants as possible. Nothing more, nothing less. They realize that there is a problem now but it’s too late to fix it anytime soon. It takes time for planes to make it through the development pipeline.
That said, they could just give us the darn R-77-1’s. They’ve been in the files this whole time and they’d help a little bit at least.
