Suggestion Idea (WIP): entrenchment equipment modification for the M60 Series tanks

ENTRNTMENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE M60 SERIES TANKS

Applies to the M60, M60A1(AOS), M60A2, M60A1 (RISE P), and M60A3 TTS

Today, I bring before you a proposal for the implementation of a functional entrenchment mechanic for the M60 series of tanks in War Thunder, specifically for models like the M60, M60A1, M60A1 RISE (Passive), and M60A3 TTS. This feature, whether represented by an integral blade or a deployable attachment, would significantly enhance the historical realism of these vehicles and introduce a valuable new layer of defensive gameplay.

Historical Basis:

The M60 series, designed during the Cold War, was built with a strong emphasis on survivability and the ability to operate in static defensive positions. While dedicated combat engineer vehicles (CEVs) existed, the concept of main battle tanks preparing their own fighting positions was integral to NATO doctrine. Many M60s were either equipped with integrated dozer blades (like the M9 blade on the M60A1 RISE) or could rapidly deploy individual digging tools. The ability to “dig in” was a fundamental skill for M60 tank crews.

Gameplay Benefits:

  1. Enhanced Survivability and Positional Play:

    • Hull-Down Advantage: The primary benefit would be the ability to quickly create hull-down positions, exposing only the more heavily armored turret. This significantly increases the tank’s survivability against kinetic rounds and ATGMs, allowing players to hold key lines of sight more effectively.
    • Improvised Cover: Players could sculpt small berms or utilize existing terrain to create improved cover, offering protection from flanking shots or artillery.
    • Strategic Defensive Positions: Encourages more deliberate and strategic defensive play, where players can choose advantageous terrain and fortify it, rather than relying solely on existing map geometry. This is especially relevant for holding capture points or defending flanks.
  2. Increased Tactical Opportunities:

    • Dynamic Battlefield: The ability to alter terrain, even subtly, introduces a dynamic element to maps. Players can adapt positions based on enemy movements, rather than being confined to pre-determined spots. And allows players to create their own spots to position themselves at.
    • Counter-Play: Opponents would need to consider that M60s might be in heavily fortified positions, forcing them to adapt their attack vectors or utilize flanking maneuvers. This adds to the cat-and-mouse aspect of tank combat.
    • Teamwork Opportunities: A dug-in M60 could provide crucial overwatch or suppressive fire while teammates maneuver, fostering more cooperative gameplay. And would allow for a single player to create multiple defensive hell down positions for teammates to use.

Conclusion:

The addition of entrenchment equipment to the M60 series would be a highly beneficial and historically accurate feature for War Thunder. It promises to deepen the tactical gameplay, enhance vehicle survivability, and give the M60s a unique and engaging role on the battlefield. We believe this would be a warmly received addition by the community, allowing players to experience these Cold War tanks in a more authentic and impactful way.
