Does the J have any upsides over the 9D? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly certain the 9D has better flare resistance, longer burn, and higher G pull.
The J has better pull and similar flare resistance plus an uncaged seeker.
Edit: the J has better tracking rate too

There’s an old-running joke during Vietnam that the Navy Sidewinders on U.S. aircraft were much better than the Air Force ones. At least until they collaborated together to create the AIM-9L in 1977.
The AIM-9J at close range (2-1.5km) rear aspect is much more deadly compared to the AIM-9D since it can pull 2 more maximum Gs as well as having a much larger seeker circle.

Yeah. While the D lacks an uncaged seeker, the longer burn time allows you to fire them from such a far range that the enemy either doesnt notice it or assumes the missile wont have the energy to hit them.
