Think I’ll try contacting the museum in Finland to get details about rest of the armor upgrades. Here are few close photos about the driver’s visor, which would probably be the most important thing in game, since everyone shoots it there. To me it looks like 10-15mm. At that angle it would probably add just enough to make that area immune to US 75mm and Soviet 76mm, which are common foes for StuG.
A +1 from me, would be nice to get more Finnish vehicles. I’m honestly somewhat surprised a Sturmi didn’t pop up from the get go
Maybe the most important would be the different machine gun mount on some of them. One with gun shield appears to be more common, but at least a couple had it without that.
This should’ve been included in the Finish subtree at the very start.
Normally I dont like adding vehicles to multiple tech-trees, but the finnish Stug with Concrete armour is unique enough that it should be obvious which is which, even in Simulator.
Surprised it inst already ingame.
While looking at the same website under the Assault gun category. I attempted to find some specs on the Stu 40 G 1944 mod, the logs Gajin probably already has a thickness for them as for the concrete armor the website never specifies and I guarantee the Museum probably doesn’t know how thick they are due to not wanting to damage the armor trying to get measurements. FINNISH ARMY 1918 - 1945: ASSAULT GUNS I would suggest trying to make a rough estimate of how many MMs of thickness the concrete would add based off what they already have listed.
Logs are usually 100mm in the game, and has a x0.05 multiplier, basically meaning a tree log adds 5mm of armor. I think the naval gamemode has concrete in it, which has a x0.35 multiplier, so just a bit more than one third of the effectiveness of regular RHA.
The right side looks to be the one with the thickest concrete, looking like 300mm+ from the horizontal, while the left side looks to only have maybe around 50mm. But I honestly don’t know if it matters, since the two frontal weakspots are still pretty exposed, and where the concrete is shells usually bounce off anyway.
For 1944 mod they would need to simply add a similar looking concrete blob as volumetric armor. It’s unlikely that precise casting anyway. Perhaps someone in Bovington might know roughly how thick it is, since it was likely made there. I’ll check what Larka’s book says about 531-44 next week.
The right side concrete is important, since part of it remained in many post-war vehicles. Larka’s mentions about it are a bit strange. There might be an extra steel plate over there as well.
Ps.541-44 “Maija” was first displayed in rusty condition in Bovington tank museum. At some point it was restored to look like German service StuG, but with the big driver’s visor and DT machine gun shield. These days it has concrete casting, logs and other late 1944 Finnish service modifications.
Hope to see +1
Should add both the normal Stug III and the Sturmi 1944 separately. +1
292 voters in a year and only 2% answered no! Lets hope the vehicles get into the game in another year.
Would you like to have a lineup with 2x Tiger I ausf. H and 3x ausf. E? Well now you can, no matter if you wanted it or not.
With this it’s quite clear we could have all 3 Finnish StuGs. Similarly the differences are pretty much external equipment, including add-on armor.
Would prefer to see all versions eventually come to the game. So yes to all. Wish that was a voting option in the poll.
A very curious photo from late summer 1944 exercise.
The StuG there has some kind tubes sticking from the gun. The angle and position would suggest they are smoke launchers. It also has that peculiar command tank antenna, which I haven’t seen in any other Finnish photos.
Update: According to Käkelä & Lärkä, these were indeed smokes.
Also more bushed up StuG from the same day.
That’s some great find! Thank you for sharing it.
I never thought that the cupola add-on was also concrete as it looked so smooth. That makes sense, considering the shape and when it was added to Finnish StuGs. Is there a weight estimate?
