Stu-40 - Sturmi the Finnish mainstay

I did vote the 1944 modification, but i think the best way to implement this, would be to have it as the 1943 modification as standard and then it is possible to install the 1944 modification as an uparmor package, like the modules for the Pz IV H that adds tracklinks to their hull and turret.

No. It is too important of a vehicle to be treated in that fashion, plus none of the numerously identical T-34s function like this in-game. For example, you can’t get a T-3485 by installing a 1944 modification on a T-34 (1940) and neither should it be with the Stug III G

The more Sturmis the merrier I’d say, but I think seeing at least two variants in-game would be ideal. Here’s a rather good picture from 1951 showing both an earlier and a later G model in post-war configuration, and how they’ve been modified in different ways when it comes to storage, headlights, etc

Pair of these drivable StuGs still appear in parades and few movies as well. These photos are from 2006-2016.

Perhaps the 1943 modification could go into the tech-tree and the 1944 one could be added as a premium.

To me the concrete armor, logs and extra plates look like premium material.

Help is still needed to measure the add-on armor pieces.

If it were me I would add each variant ('43, '44, postwar) separately, possibly in a folder

Some extra pictures to add to the topic, from Wikimedia Commons.

Also notable is a good shot of the DT mount in this picture.

Spoiler

Hopefully we see this in-game one day, ideally in separate variants.

At first it sounds bit odd, but it could be fine. Other trees have a load of Shermans, Panzer IVs and T-34s on the same BR, so why not 3x StuGs? One of them should probably still go as a premium.

You surely need to split '43, '44 and '51 into different suggestion as there is enough differences between them to justify separate additions. '43 and '51 would be great additions as researchable vehicles while '44 as premium. Especially '51 would be potent and interesting vehicle with the APDS round if it was ever produced in physical form.

Again, I think you really need to create three different suggestion for each version, they may not have big differences but having access to different version in form of research and premium would do good for Swedish Tech Tree. You already have all the sources and materials you need, just split the current suggestion.

Is there any other secondary sources ? If you can find I highly suggest you to create a separate suggestion of Stu-40 (1951) with APDS round. Alternatively you can try and contact the website owner and ask for his source about APDS.

It would be similar to Pvkv m/43 (1946) and Pvkv m/43 (1963) in terms of placement and performance. And since SAV 20.12.48 is not accessible all the time '44 Stu-40 would be quite nice premium at Rank III.

  • Stu-40 (1944), 4.0 Premium
  • Stu-40 (1951), 5.0 Research

No I haven’t found anything else about the APDS. I’d guess there is something about it in Finnish archives. That text of course strongly implies it was build and tested.

I also thought about making separate suggestions, but then again each one would have to pass separately, which could take forever and even that doesn’t guarantee anything. Developers should be able to see the combined potential better like this.

Exactly 80 years ago 4.6.1944 Marshal Mannerheim’s birthday parade. He turned 77 that day. Few days later Soviets started a massive assault where Finnish StuGs got into action for the first time.

Think I’ll try contacting the museum in Finland to get details about rest of the armor upgrades. Here are few close photos about the driver’s visor, which would probably be the most important thing in game, since everyone shoots it there. To me it looks like 10-15mm. At that angle it would probably add just enough to make that area immune to US 75mm and Soviet 76mm, which are common foes for StuG.

A +1 from me, would be nice to get more Finnish vehicles. I’m honestly somewhat surprised a Sturmi didn’t pop up from the get go

Maybe the most important would be the different machine gun mount on some of them. One with gun shield appears to be more common, but at least a couple had it without that.

This should’ve been included in the Finish subtree at the very start.

Normally I dont like adding vehicles to multiple tech-trees, but the finnish Stug with Concrete armour is unique enough that it should be obvious which is which, even in Simulator.
