The technology was also in its early stages then, it’s just about forgivable for a 90s developed jet to not have HMD and downright unforgivable for anything upgraded after about 2005 or whenever the AIM-9X was produced

Yes, but if we’re talking cost/benefit, an HMD wasn’t necessary until high G HOBS missiles, it was always an advantage but one that often cost more than it was worth, so like I said, any jet before those missiles could get away without an HMD, afterwards though it becomes a requirement.
tbf they did give HMD to the Jas39A bc of a technicality, soooooo, might give it to Rafale as well

upgraded F-16, F-15, block 2 super hornets, all are the REASONABLE counterparts to the 4.5 canards
Oh yeah, thing is aside from the F/A-18 and some Flanker derivatives there isn’t much left to add airframe wise before we get to stealth, so the eurocanards do make sense as the next step for top tier air, that or next gen IR missiles, and God knows Germany needed some eurocanard so that’s what we’re getting
