Why on this wonderful blue ball of rock and water that we call Earth is the stock loadout of the Phantom FGR.2 at 12.0 just two Aim-9Ds and a gunpod? The most easily defeated Aim-9s at Rank 7 and a Gunpod. That’s it. MOST other aircraft at this BR at least get two Radar missiles too for a four missile start instead of just two really crappy missiles.
I get that this is probably a holdover from when the Phantoms were 11.3 before the decompression and it was likely really painful back then, but the least you could do is just upgrade the stock loadout to have two Aim-7Es as well so it gives the FGR.2 something to work with.
This is precisely why I bought the Mig-21 Bison so I could skip this BR when I was grinding for the Gripen. But the spaded Phantoms are great for CAS at 10.7 so might as well get the FGR.2. (the experience between the joy of a time I had with the stock Gripen and the pain I feel in the FGR.2 is incredible ngl.)
I mean, even once you unlock missiles I wouldnt say its worth it anyway, in ARB the Tornado F.3 outclasses it in most of the important roles (better missiles, radar etc.) at the cost of ground attack.
The only real use for them is in Sim battles where they at least sit at a lower BR and can base bomb
Only reason I am going for them is because they can have a rather healthy bomb loadout while still keeping a good missile loadout for anti-CAS in AirRB at 10.7 (Gaijin thinks they’re fine at 10.7 ground)
Which is why I am going for it. I don’t really need any other jets for AirRB since I have the Gripen and Eurofighter Typhoon. (I like the Gripen more than the Eurofighter) But I do need a competent aircraft for 10.7 ground hence the Phantoms. (the other options are the Sea Harrier and the Buccaneer but neither carry enough missiles to deal with air threats.)
Yeah, I absolutely adore the AIM-9D on the Ayit, but that is 9.3. I’ve never bothered using the Kfir C.7 even after unlocking it purchasing it ages ago, simply because I cbf with a AIM-9D stock grind at 12.0. I’m also not about to reward Gaijin’s money grubbing by GEing my way through it. Although, at least it gets Python3s at the end of the grind.
