Introduction:
With the production of the Casspir APC family of vehicles coming to an end in 1994, the market was open for a new smaller APC with similar capabilities to the Casspir. One of many South African Defence which set out to create an alternative to the aging Casspir was DTM (Drakensberg Truck Manufacturers), which started development on the new Springbuck APC back in 2001. The Springbuck APC would go through various upgrades and would serve in multiple peacekeeping missions. In 2012 Springbuck APC family of vehicles was acquired by another South African defence firm DCD Protected Mobility, which itself is famous for creating Mine Detection Vehicles (MDV). After acquiring the Springbuck, DCD went back to the drawing in order to improve capabilities of the Springbuck and to create a new range of Springbuck APC’s. In 2023 as part of DCD’s 125th anniversary, the Defence firm unveiled a new variant, the Springbuck Weapons Carrier (MPAV). This variant of the Springbuck has a flatbed at the rear which allows it to be equipped with various weapons. For the 2024 African Aerospace and Defence Expo (AAD), DCD unveiled the Springbuck MPAV equipped with a new remote operated 23mm turret from Dynateq International known as the Super Rogue. This gives the Springbuck the capability to engage soft skin targets and low flying aircraft.
