History and Description

SOKO SP RR is a self-propelled rapid response truck-based howitzer designed and manufactured by the Serbian defense company Yugoimport. It was constructed as a direct response to SORA - a 122 mm SPH made by VTI (Military Technical Institute of Serbia). SP RR was unveiled for the first time to the public during the defense exhibition “Partner 2013” in Belgrade. Aside from being exported to foreign countries, it was also supposed to be purchased by Serbia to replace its aging 2S1 Gvozdikas. Much to Yugoimport’s dismay, the Serbian Army decided not to replace the 2S1 Gvozdikas with the new vehicle, but instead to modernize them.

The SPH is based on the Serbian-made 6x6 FAP 2228 military truck chassis. The vehicle is powered by a Daimler Chrysler OM 906 LA, Euro 3; 6.37 lit., 279 hp engine, coupled to a mechanical 6-gear transmission. SP RR has a maximum range of 600 kilometers and can reach 80 km/h on the road. It is capable of crossing a vertical step of 630 mm and fording a depth of 1.2 m without preparation. The vehicle can climb slopes up to 60% and side slopes to 30%.
SP RR has an armored crew cabin at the front of the vehicle and an armored turret at the rear. The crew cabin and the turret provide STANAG 4569 Level 1 protection, ballistic protection against 7.62x51 NATO rounds, and blast protection against hand grenades, unexploded artillery fragment submunitions, and other anti-personnel explosive devices that might be detonated under the vehicle. Four people make up the crew. The driver and the commander sit in the cabin, while the gunner and the loader are in the turret. In addition, 6 (3+3) BDK M79 smoke grenade launchers are mounted on the cabin.
The main armament of SOKO SP RR consists of a 122 mm 35 caliber D-30J howitzer. The SPH fires HE ammunition with a maximum range of 17.3 km and HE/BB ammunition with a maximum range of 21 km. The 122 mm howitzer is equipped with a semi-automatic ammunition loading system (same as the one in 2S1 Gvozdika). The vehicle carries a total of 51 rounds. 25 projectiles and 25 propellants are placed on the left side of the turret in two separate ammo racks. Additional 26 projectiles and 26 propellants are stored in a single ammo rack, at the back of the driver’s cabin. A 7.62 mm M86 machine gun is mounted on the turret, above the loader’s hatch. Gun elevation and turret traverse are controlled hydraulically, with manual controls available as a backup. Gun elevation ranges from -7° to +65°. The maximum rate of fire is 6 rounds/min according to Yugoimport.
