SOKO M-09
History and Description
SOKO M-09 is a 105 mm armored truck-mounted howitzer designed and manufactured by the Serbian defense company Yugoimport. It was unveiled for the first time to the public during the defense exhibition “Partner 2013” in Belgrade. The M-09 represents a modern fire support vehicle, particularly for modern joint combat units and rapid deployment forces, intended for rapid response to the challenges of the modern battlefield, including large anti-terrorist and anti-guerrilla operations. Two prototype vehicles were built.
M-09 is based on a Yugoslav TAM 150 6x6 military truck chassis with an armored crew cabin at the front and the howitzer mounted at the rear. The gun mount features shield protection on the 180° frontal arc. While on the move, all five crew members are housed in a cabin that has Level 1 protection according to STANAG 4569. This provides ballistic protection against small arms firing 7.62x51 NATO caliber and blast protection against hand grenades, unexploded artillery fragments, and small anti-personnel explosive devices detonated under the vehicle. The M-09 weighs around 12 tons and can reach a top speed of 85 km/h.
The vehicle is equipped with a Serbian M56A1 105 mm/33 caliber howitzer, which is based on the Yugoslav M56 105 mm/28 caliber howitzer. The original barrel assembly weighed 526 kg while the new 105 mm/33 caliber barrel weighs 616 kg with the barrel on its own weighing 410 kg. Other modifications include the installation of a new double-baffle muzzle brake while the existing horizontal sliding breech and breech block are replaced by identical ones made of stronger steel. The 105 mm M56A1 can fire all ammunition developed for the US M101 howitzer. The ammunition loading system is manual. A total of 60 rounds are carried in two storage boxes at the back of the crew cabin. The M-09 has a maximum firing range of 18.1 km with the new HE-ER BB projectile and 15 km with the new HE-ER BT (boattail) projectile. Gun elevation ranges from -3° to +65°. The M-09 can come into action and fire in less than 60 sec with a rate of fire from 6 to 8 rounds/min. To increase its self-protection, a 12.7 mm M2HB machine gun is mounted at the center top of the crew cabin.
