Still it never gets old seeing a bunch of Premium Timmys just crest the hill into the giant bowl of C cap on fire arc going straight for it without any cover and half the enemy team watching them from hull down positions close to their spawn in disbelief. (as if that map hasn’t been in the matchmaker in exactly the same config for probably 10 years now and it’s obvious whats going to happen) Every single match. You can try to tell them not to do it, you can beg, you can ask nicely to follow you around, they dont want to, some peoople will never learn. Running around in the open like a chicken is their thing i believe.
Those people are the reason why all maps need to be flat, they got no concept of sightlines or where enemies will be and where they could be shot from. And they also dont want to learn from it and react like 8 year olds that get told they shouldnt only eat candy if you tell them to please not do it. well its a possibility they are 8 years old i just realized. It is a gargantuan task to cater for these people. But COD_shipment should do. Thinking about it, not that gargantuan actually. Could also just let both teams spawn right on top of each other on the same spawnpoint, let spawnprotection run out and go.
So you should show me a map nowadays that you can snipe from more than 1km, Gaijin just removed all. Snipe is so cool bro, and without laser ragefinder its really cool
Gaijin should do maps if you want you can snipe, flank, or stay in the city if you want.
with small maps you sit in the corner with eng off, whats more boring?
I totally agree with you, gaijin destroyed some maps, everything is so plan now. I remember the day when I snipe guys from 3km in some maps, it was crazy, killing a guy without laser rangefinder. Nowadays everything is just noob-lazy-like. European province and field of poland were really good maps
Just make more distance for RB and bring RB layout back to some maps. (e.g. Ardennes, Maginot… maybe some more)
Playing GRB in such small layout is simply pain and cause spawn - to - spawn snipe issue.
In the lower BRs, small maps are completely acceptable. Now, from 8.0 onwards, with fast things firing missiles and APFSDS, they should be mostly large maps. In 12.0, they should be just huge maps. All tanks have good mobility and can easily hit from kilometers away. AAA would have more room to maneuver without having an enemy tank destroying them at your respawn. Honestly, players who like small, chaotic maps where you are restricted to a single place in that chaos should go play World of Tanks or stay in the arcade. Especially for me who plays top tier daily, being restricted to the abandoned factory in almost every match, that is the perfect example of a horrible map
Red Desert is indeed one of the best top-tier maps. plenty of space and cover for SPAA, jets spawns are far enough, you don’t get spawncamped immediately, and can comfortably make it back to the contested area on your second spawn.
One of the main reasons I hate top tier is the constant crap-map spam. I don’t like CS:Thunder. And CS: Thunder also does not fit the weapon systems of top tier.
Gaijin is destroying the maps to please its premium novice players who are functionally illiterate, one of the things that pleased me about War Thunder in 2016, when I didn’t even have a PC, was the more realistic game style, completely different from World of Tanks, and now War Thunder is becoming more and more arcade-like World of Tanks.
a couple of small maps now and then are fine, why it has to be all the time is what i don’t get. On some of them you get tactical possibilities or strategies that dont or wouldnt work the same way in lower tiers.
Or why theres no option for players to chose from. I prefer Bigger maps/I prefer smaller maps and you get then preferably put into matches that start on the according map size. Theres probably 50 matches starting at most brs every minute i dont get why thats not possible
As others have stated, the bigger issue, with the large maps especially, is an actual lack of map design; someone just sat down for 20 minutes with the terrain tool and said “ok here’s some hills around the spawns and we’re done” and “let’s put 3 buildings around this cap point” but everything between the spawns and points are just open fields which is what creates the everyone just camps the first hill they come to and waits for 10 minutes. They just need more stuff actually in them to use because right now trying to move anywhere just puts in you in a killbox from every direction.
As an aside, I believe some of the issue is how scale is actually used in War Thunder, Air maps are a good example of it: your plane is practically the size of the cities you fly over, the “mountain” ranges in say Pyrennes have very little depth even the valley in the middle is just shallow and wide, the valleys on that and similar maps are many times much too narrow to actually hope to use as cover.
The ground maps suffer in some similar ways where they want it to be big…but it isn’t actually big or spread out enough or filled enough and it’s only made worse my game mode and mechanic design so most of the map is essentially a waste of space: here’s our biggest map but it’s 1 cap point, here’s another big map 3 cap points spawns for both teams directly face each other with wide open space between them and the 3 cap points are all in the center of the map 300m apart from one another.
“Everything between is open fields” is an exaggeration. Most often, these maps have plenty of cover in between, say Red Desert or Pradesh. The only examples I can immediately think of are Mozdok, Fields of Poland, and C side on Fire Arc; these maps lack cover between caps, but it is still present. It is far more common for large maps to contain many terrain features for cover, such as the sand dunes of Sands of Tunisia (RIP the central mountain and deep river), Spaceport, Maginot Line large version, etc. This preserves freedom of maneuver while still maintaining long sightlines.
On the other hand, maps that are both large and have exclusively short sightlines are unnecessary. They create the long driving times you mentioned, as well as the uncertainty of tactics. For example, I regard Breslau as one of the worst maps due to the slightly large, unpredictable urban area with unfavourable terrain. You can drive for a few minutes just to be hit crossing the tenth intersection you come across; nobody has the time to check all the corners. Fields of Eastern Europe (specifically Domination 3 cap variation) is another example; after developers reworked this map, it lost most of its sniping spots in favour of short distance battles. To drive for a long time without the possibility of engagement, and not even arrive at a good position, is what should be avoided.
I dont agree, Breslau is what city maps should be in war thunder, not those shits straight maps that everybody stay together in the same corner. How can you be lazy to check a corner? omg!! This war thunder players are so noob-like, now I see it
I don’t get it — do you seriously enjoy standing on the back side of a hill for half an hour trying to hit someone just as autistic as you from one and a half or two kilometers away? It usually pisses me off when I want to leave such a match, but my squadmates want to keep playing.
It’s a matter of personal taste I suppose. Personally I like the medium sized maps the best, such as Arcict or North Holland, which I think strike a decent balance. The really big maps I don’t mind if I get once in a while, but I get quite bored if I get too many of then during a session.
Yes, if more of my GRB matches looked like that with conscious, intentional positioning and movement and less twitch reflexes and bat-mutation based echolocation - I’d play more GRB and less ASB.
Half the reason german tanks are nowhere as scary as they should be is because we’re engaging from 100-200 meters rather than the near-kilometres of late war WW2.
It’s a combination of both poor imagination and poor map balancing. It’s really unfortunate how a game like War Thunder, that excels on so many levels, have some of the blandest and most unbalanced maps I’ve ever experienced in a video game.
The maps in general are bad, it’s worse at top tier cause you’re forced to knife fight in small towns when these tanks should be peaking over hills and shooting 2km away
