Suggestion No.81

G’day lads. Due to the recent introduction of the IRIS-T SLM and other systems that need an independent radar vehicle, I decided it would be a good time to suggest a similar vehicle. This vehicle is the Sky Sabre/Land Ceptor, which can not only be added to Britain, but also to Italy :)

Description:

Spoiler

The MBDA Sky Sabre, also known as Land Ceptor, is a modern air defense system designed to protect ground forces from aerial threats. It replaces the older Rapier system, where it now has a bigger interception range. It uses the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM), specifically the normal CAMM with a 25km range, as well as CAMM-ER with over 45km range. The system is equipped with the Giraffe Agile Multible Beam (AMB) radar, providing 360-degree coverage with a detection range of up to 120 - 180km. It posseses multi-target capability, where all 8 (24 can be launched at the same time, but a single launcher ofc has only 8) missiles can be launched simultaneously against different threats. Italy also operates the launcher as well as missile, however the system overall is different, one example being the radar it uses a KRONOS LAND AESA or X-TAR3D radar.

History:

Spoiler

As already said in the description, the system was a replacement for the Rapier missile system used by the British Army. The program originated from the Future Local Area Air Defence System (FLAADS) initiative, which was meant to modernize the UK’s ground based air defense capabilities. The system officially entered service with the British Army in 2021.

The Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM) was developed by MBDA UK as part of the same FLAADS program. Its design is based on the Advanced Short Range Air to Air Missile (ASRAAM), incorporating updated electronics, a soft vertical launch system, and an active radar homing seeker. The CAMM was first introduced in the Royal Navy in 2018 as part of the Sea Ceptor system, replacing the Sea Wolf missile on Type 23 frigates. The British Army adopted CAMM for the Sky Sabre system in 2021.

The CAMM-ER (Extended Range) variant was developed jointly by the UK and Italy, featuring a larger booster to extend its range beyond 45 km. As of 2023, it was in the final stages of development and was expected to be integrated into various air defense systems. It has been fired multiple times, even recently in 2024 with the Italian Grifo system

Armaments:

The EMADS launcher is capable of carrying 8 CAMM missiles, including the ER

The Italian one meanwhile uses the KRONOS LAND or X-TAR3D radar

Specifications:

Spoiler

The system is mounted on a MAN HX77 8x8 truck. The truck has a length of 10.13m, a width of 2.55m and a height of 3.92m. It’s around 32 tons heavy. It’s powered by a MAN D 2066 LF34 engine with 443hp at 1900rpm, while the transmission is a 8 speed ZF type 12AS 2301 OD.

How has this suggestion not gotten more praise

With how tall the radar is, I feel like this would be the best SPAA for those cramped urban maps, able to peek above the roof line. Downside would be sticking out on open maps though.

edit: Also MBDA have implied compatibility with their LPS missile, which would be funny

I am curious to see how CAMM ER will perform in comparison to IRIS-T SLM.
The standard data you find online is very similar.
Similar range and altitude, even if CAMM ER has a slightly higher range. Both use data link for mid course flight correction and only switch on their own seeker head in the terminal phase. In addition, both use a cold launch mechanism to launch their missiles.
The serious differences are the higher manoeuvrability of the IRIS-T and the different seeker technologies (infrared versus radar).

Incorrect, SLM uses hot launch.

Sky sabre would be very cool to have in game, not to mention that I think it can launch missiles without radar.

I want this to come after the Umkhonto IR and before the Umkhonto R

It cannot. EMADS launching system needs external platforms to operate

Absolutely +1 for both Italy and the UK

Cant it just use the optical mast?

+1 for both

Ofc the main factor for independent operation is if the launcher got the sight or not.

Trials of a launcher without a radar.

Adding to that, missile guidence is done by the launcher itself.
