SKOT-2AP
History
The SKOT (Středni kolový obrněný transportér) was a vehicle developed in Czechoslovakia at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. Intensive design work led to the production of the first prototypes of the SKOT transporters in 1961 and their submission for qualification and military testing.
That same year, a preliminary agreement was concluded, later confirmed by an agreement between the governments of the Polish People’s Republic and Czechoslovakia on the joint production of SKOT personnel carriers.
SKOT personnel carriers traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers on various roads and in various weather and climatic conditions. These vehicles sailed for many hours in still waters and the Baltic Sea, crossing the Vistula River and rushing mountain rivers. The main goal of these tests was to identify all vehicle imperfections and develop appropriate modifications that would guarantee the delivery of reliable equipment to both armies.

Designers from the Military University of Technology (WAT) undertook further work on improving the SKOT transporters. They developed a turret capable of firing at ground and air targets. The design of this turret allowed for high elevation angles of the main weapon with the use of new OCS-90 sight. The introduction of the new turret increased the total weight of the vehicle to 14.9 tons. The crew and intended role of the vehicle remained the same as in the SKOT-2A version.
SKOT transporters equipped with these turrets were designated SKOT-2AP. The model manufactured at WAT underwent comprehensive qualification and military testing and confirmed the validity of the adopted solutions. For the speed and modernity of the turret’s design and its equipment, the WAT team received an award from the Minister of National Defense.
At the time, it was considered one of the best armored personnel carriers in the world, rated more highly than its Soviet counterpart, the BTR-60. In Poland, however, it is mainly remembered as one of the symbols of the communist regime’s authority. One of the most iconic images of Martial Law is a photograph taken by a Newsweek correspondent showing a SKOT-2AP in front of Warsaw’s Moskwa Cinema, with an advertisement for the film “Apocalypse Now” in the background. These vehicles were also widely used in the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968 and the December 1970 protests in Poland.
The conversion of the SKOT transporter to the SKOT-2AP version was carried out at the FSC plant in Lublin during the first half of the 1970s. Most vehicles received the new turrets after the end of the serial production of the transporter. In total, 1,185 units were converted, making the SKOT-2AP the most widely used combat version of the SKOT transporter in the Polish armored and mechanized forces.
