This also allows new players to fight on their own skill level, and also provides more reliable data for balancing, since individual player skill would be less likely to skew performance

Though this is not relevant to the whole suggestion the issue comes down to moderation and how annoying it can get. For infantry mode it could make sense but it may not be the best if you want to see how it ends look at RUST. Not the best Fox Hole prox chat works because you paid for the game and getting banned would be a pain. WarThunder would have a lot of prox chat issues in moderation.
While yes, it would have a lot of issues that are strictly related to Prox Chat. However, without it, you get what War Thunder is. Where communication is nonexistent, and when you try to tell someone there is a tank around the corner, they don’t listen.
Those who don’t speak English can still understand enough words to get the idea->Tank->Corner/Around. So they don’t hesitate to drive forward to death.
That’s why, where I stand, for skill-based matchmaking to be a viable option, you need to somehow implement it.
An in-game translator for chat and Proximity Voice chat makes skill-based matchmaking truly viable. Otherwise, you will have a lot of people that the game system will assume are bad at the game or poor, and lower them into matches of said battle ranking, where seal clubbing will occur.
Other games provide the tools necessary to report people who abuse proximity voice chat, but even thenit’ss not all chat, so you cannmic-screameam and send everyone to the hospital.
It’s limited to that area next to you and the person nearby you.
Basically, Proximity Voice chat works hand in hand with skill-based matchmaking. Otherwise, it will be abused.
