Construction
The construction of the lead ship of the class began at the Bazán shipyard in Ferrol in December 1989 and was delivered to the Navy in March 1991. Only two and a half years elapsed between the start of construction and the delivery of the final vessel.
These ships gained particular prominence during the so-called Cod War, during which they were dispatched to protect Spanish and Portuguese fishing vessels from Canadian Navy boardings. They are also known for their support to state security forces in combating illegal trafficking and providing assistance to vessels in distress
Design
The Serviola-class patrol boats represent a modernized version of the Halcón class from the National Company Bazán. In the early 1980s, Bazán-Ferrol sold five units of the original Halcón class to the Argentine Naval Prefecture, and another six to the Mexican Navy. The latter, constructed by Bazán-San Fernando and designated by their buyer as the Uribe class, were followed by a series of four in a locally developed and built version called the Holzinger class, and another series of four in a further development known as the Sierra class.
The design requirements from the Spanish Navy dictated that these vessels should be capable of operating on the open sea for extended periods, even in rough seas, without compromising their operational capabilities. They feature a flight deck with the capacity to accommodate medium-sized helicopters, although lacking a hangar for maintenance purposes. Additionally, they are equipped with a small hospital with six beds and two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs

Operational History
On May 26, 2013, the Serviola, alongside the offshore patrol vessel Infanta Elena, intercepted the treasure hunting ship Endeavour, flying the flag of Togo, off the coast of Málaga. Despite claiming to be an oceanographic research vessel conducting activities related to archaeological heritage in Spanish waters of the Alboran Sea, it was ordered to leave the area after its activities were verified. The ship was escorted to Algeciras, where it came under the control of the Civil Guard.
On February 19, 2014, the Vigía disrupted Royal Navy exercises in disputed waters around the Rock of Gibraltar, leading to a British diplomatic protest.
On July 23, 2015, the Serviola intercepted 1500 kg of hashish 21 nautical miles off the coast of Algeciras.
On September 19, the Centinela departed from its base in Ferrol headed for the Gulf of Guinea to support various navies in the area for a three-month period. Its mission included collaboration on security, counterterrorism, combating illicit trafficking, illegal immigration, and piracy. During this deployment, it assisted a Spanish sailor aboard the Senegalese-flagged fishing vessel Borom Darajdi, who had suffered a partial finger amputation.
In October 2015, the United Kingdom lodged a protest with the Spanish government regarding the entry of the Serviola into waters considered to be within Gibraltar’s jurisdiction.
In June 2018, the Vigía provided escort and coordination for the ships MV Aquarius, Dattilo (CP 940), and Orione (P 410) in the transfer of the 629 rescued individuals by the Aquarius to Valencia.
In February 2021, the Serviola participated in an operation off the coast of Lugo, intercepting a ship carrying 2000 kg of cocaine.
With an age approaching 30 years, its replacement by the Maritime Action Ship (BAM) is planned in the coming decade.
