History
History
The Scipio project originated from growing Polish–Slovak defense cooperation during the early 2010s. At the time, Slovakia was searching for a modern replacement for its aging OT-64 SKOT armored personnel carriers and BMP-series infantry fighting vehicles, while Poland was looking to expand the export potential of the Rosomak platform. The idea behind Scipio was to combine the proven Polish Rosomak 8×8 chassis with the Slovak-developed TURRA 30 unmanned turret designed by EVPU.
The resulting vehicle was intended to serve not only as an export demonstrator, but also as a serious contender for Slovakia’s future wheeled infantry fighting vehicle requirement. Scipio was armed with a 30 mm 2A42 autocannon, a coaxial 7.62 mm PKT machine gun, and anti-tank guided missiles, giving the Rosomak platform significantly greater firepower than standard APC variants. The vehicle made its public debut during the IDET 2015 exhibition in Brno, Czech Republic, before undergoing live-fire and mobility demonstrations at the Zahorie training ground in Slovakia.
For several years, Scipio was viewed as one of the leading candidates for Slovakia’s future 8×8 armored vehicle program. The project also carried political importance, representing increasing military-industrial cooperation between Poland and Slovakia within the Visegrád Group. Discussions included local Slovak production and the possible acquisition of around 30 vehicles for the Slovak Armed Forces.
However, Slovakia eventually shifted toward a broader domestic armored vehicle program which evolved into the BOV 8×8/Vydra project. Rather than directly adopting the Scipio configuration, Slovakia pursued a more nationally branded solution while still retaining many concepts and technologies associated with the earlier Polish–Slovak cooperation. Although the BOV 8×8 program later faced delays and restructuring, it effectively replaced Scipio as Slovakia’s primary future wheeled combat vehicle concept.
Despite Scipio never entering production, the concept itself never fully disappeared. Cooperation between Polish and Slovak industry surrounding the Rosomak platform and TURRA turret family continued into the 2020s. More recently, the idea resurfaced through the Rosomak-L demonstrator equipped with the newer TURRA-30 SA turret, effectively acting as a spiritual successor to the original Scipio project. This modernized configuration once again combines a Polish Rosomak chassis with a Slovak unmanned turret system, demonstrating that the original Polish–Slovak concept behind Scipio is still alive today.
