SAAB JAS 39E/F Gripen - General discussion

So far with the Fox 3 buffs the E does well at airfield defense but I have to switch to SEAD because imo those ARMs aren’t cutting it for me.

In regards to the Meteor discussion, I think it’s pretty obvious. Gaijin are going to add ECM/EW/other ARM countermeasures in order to negate the ranges of them. We saw the Towed Decoy bind during the dev server in the Aircraft category, so clearly it’s somewhere on their list. We’ll end up with a Meteor that can kill anything so long as you can get close enough to get through it’s EW, and the top tier loop will be spamming missiles and hoping they hit based off HOJ.

Because adding larger maps would make no sense, of course.

Holy guys i stop paying attention for one second…

That would also make sense, i don’t have any sources that say anything on that so i won’t claim anything about it either :P It was just a guess based on how it’s built.

Differently constructed missiles with different physical guidance techniques. I ment if you just take the same missile and scale it up.

How do you logically conclude that something larger and heavier must accelerate the same as something smaller and lighter because they “are both missiles” ?

Kinematics isn’t about speed and acceleration that would be kinetics. Kinematics Is more about the ratio of drag and energy bleed during a turn compared to the acceleration provided, i.e. how they move and turn through the air. The AIM-174 and PL-17 are solid fuel built for REALLY long ranges, they are not designed to accelerate or turn hard during short/medium ranges.

not even mentioning that radars are currently capped at a 100km detection range (afaik), and that players spawn not much more than a 100km from eachother (airspawns), even on RB EC

You might be ignoring inertia since the Meteor is heavier compared to AMRAAM. Would be okay to say Meteor would lose more speed over time after burn than the R-37M and AIM-174B, but I wouldn’t say that about the AMRAAM.

I would say the bigger issue is that gimbaled ESAs are still doing electronic mid-scan updates for target outside of FOV

I don’t think the weight of the meteor is enough to offset how much more drag it generates compared to the AIM-120

But are we looking at potential Gaijin’s implementation or real world?

Gaijin reduced the AIM-7F’s drag by quite a bit in order to model the reduced drag that a missile has during burntime. Given that the Meteor would be burning for a lot longer than the AIM-7F, it’s fair to say that the Meteor would have quite bit less drag modeled than the AMRAAM.

Meteor is still massively more draggy, and a ramjet will probably not produce as powerful of an effect as a rocket motor burning.

Sidenote*
The MiG-35 actually have 200km (with detection)

Are we still talking real world or in-game implementation? You didn’t answer that question, it seems that in order to replicate certain performance criteria of the Meteor, it would need to have reduced drag compared to the AMRAAM.

For in game, the missile with 2 decently big intakes relative to the missiles size should have way more drag when the motor is on or off. The ramjet is not going to produce nearly as strong of a drag reducing effect as the motor on an AIM-7 or AIM-120

all the chinese top tier aesas have around 250km for engagement

and 300km for detection

Damn it actually looks sick as hell. Ramjets are such a badass technology. How much drag does an SR-71 produce with it’s ramjets?

wow really? I only own the Jeff. PL12A is really disgusting as well. Like a R-77-1 had a baby with a 120D… Will have to grind china more now.

Why make statements about certain drag and thrust values when neither one of us knows the exact values of it irl? Should just discuss the actual performance criteria numbers.

The only one people keep talking about is 100km in 90 seconds, more than likely an ideal scenario since it wouldn’t be very long after motor burnout

in my opinion the radar range dosent matter for anything beyond 100km

even in nuclear escelation i were never engaging targets beyond 80km and putting the radar scope to 200km will just make it harder to see what is going on closer to you

That isn’t what this is though.

Big rocket motor vs very small booster

I don’t know as much about the PL-17, but the AIM-174 is an air launched RIM-174 which is known to be a pretty maneuverable missile. According to Chinese missile studies, it is estimated to do over 38g but take that with a grain of salt
