300rds isn’t a lot of ammo for the rpm of the GA 35s but even the ZA 35 doesn’t need to fire for long with the power of DM13 and the mobility
tbh this vehicle seems more like the Dardo with a high rate of fire penning sabot v cool
Would have a similar play style to the Dardo but with decent missiles, better gun, and maybe fire-on-the-move capability for the ZT3s
More Rooikats!
More ZT3 carriers!
+1 for the UK
There is one missing photo of the command variant:
Obvious +1 for both variants, probably foldered under one another or as a researchable modification. The 35mm offers a nice change of pace from the modern 30 or 40mm formula.
Plus 35mm apds is just straight up better then the dog ass 30mm
It could potentally get a APFSDS from Germany named DM 23 (35mm)
From what I can find it seems to be FAPDS-T (DM33) but South Africa was never supplied such ammunition due to Relations between Germany and Switzerland. By technicality it absolutely can but for balance sake I highly doubt it would even need the 35mm FAPDS-T
I thought the relations were somewhat good between us and the Germans because we had several German defense companies here working with us and German designs like the TH 400 or TH 800 participate for contracts.
I also don’t know if the Rooikat 35 should get FAPDS because the high rpm of the GA 35 but the AP rounds don’t have enough pen for the BR the Rooikat 35 would go at (probably 9.3)
Ammunition range used by Vektor GA-35
and standard Oerlikon SAPHEI.
Never used things like APDS, FAPDS or APFSDS.
GA 35 has the same fr as the KD Oerlikons that use it. So Rpm is not a problem, they just never got it.
The development of this vehicle took place during the 1980’s and relations with a lot of countries were strained due to the Soweto Uprising.
This is the employed ammunition range yes, in practice the GA-35 cannon can fire standard NATO ammunition.
Correct. But it won’t get them.
Question; how common was 35mm in NATO during the Cold War and how much is it still used?
It was decently common. A bunch of self propelled, towed and ship based systems used it. Now it is simmilar.
I always thought it wasn’t used much with exception to a few things like the Gepard but I’m happy they used it
By default it already would be using NATO munitions, most likely DM11. So it easily could use potentially the FAPDS-T and such, not like it would need it though.
Nope. It was using locally made ammunition, with exclusion of SAPHEI.
