Okay, then what’s your point? Why shouldn’t it have Penguins?
We should not have a seeker camera like now on mavs and other AGMs and also should not be able to lock onto a target on a pylon.
No , it is nowhere mentioned that it offers LOAL ( lock after launch ) . Pretty sure it has to be locked to something to be fired and this is where the issue comes from.
If the seeker is passive IR then there is no need for MFD but the missile is cued with the HUD like a classic FOX-2 , in which case practical range is determined by the visual range of the pilot .
Yeah found this aswell . So it appears that the missile has IN ( inertial navigation ) but it is not true LOAL , it can not be launched at a general direction and be expected to aquire the target by itself like true LOAL. It requires target coordinates before launch. The IN can only be updated with radar tracking which the F-5 can’t perform, so in our case it can only be locked with the HUD like FOX-2 .
WDYM “not true LOAL”? All missiles need target coordinates. We have great example of LOAL missile is AGM-114L. Before launch it every time check possibility of LOBL, and if it cant LOBL missile will launch in LOAL mode.
What i mean is in the seeker is not active during midcourse guidance ( INS ) it only activates at a given proximity from the designated target coodinates which need to be imputed before launch as showcased by the KONGSBERG brochure. You can not launch it at a given direction and expect to find the target by itself , it needs spacial coordinates of the target to be able to know when to activate the seeker . The F-5 has no means to do that so pretty sure the only way to fire it is by locking before launch through the HUD.
An actually unique F-5 that isn’t just a reskin of the F-5A or F-5E?
+1
Decided to look some more into it, here is a little more detailed list but there are much more i am looking into at the moment
Unique Norwegian modifications (F-5A(G))
- Increased Plate Thicknesses in the wings, rhis basically means a stronger wing structure and better protection, probably not by much but everything counts!
- specially developed arrestor hook, reinforced structure (don’t know why)
- heating elements for defrosting the front cover of the cockpit hood
- New additional compass “fixed card” named Ekholt compass
New features for the F-5A(G) Late service (The event vehicle, wich is this specific suggestion)
- new cockpit, kind of f16 inspired, noticeable difference
- Aim 9L sidewinder aa missile
- mk.3 penguin asw fire and forget missile
Did the Starfighter fire the Penguin? Ive heard that this photo was only for demonstration.
According to wikipedia:
The first airborne installations were on F-104Gs of the Norwegian Air Force, the missiles being fitted to standard Bullpup rails on the two underwing hardpoints.
Afaik the Starfighters were just fitted with Penguins for testing, not combat use.
Yeah, that photo of the Starfighter with a Penguin missile is from 1973. I think thats a little early for flight tests and firing from fixed wings.
This is one of the modifications of the planes, something wich was kept in use for a long long time, and follows this F-5A(G)! Here is a clip from 1989 of it in-use, JATO - jet Assisted Takeoff
To my knowlegde, as my sources states, this is one of the Unique Norwegian modifications of the f-5
Notice how the plane “jumps” when engaged
One of the F-5A(G)'s in the 336 Tiger squadron, note the pilot is wearing a tiger helmet
If the pilot model doesn’t have the helmet its literally unplayable
lol
Tbf we could probably bug report it
Probably, well see! :D
I’ve been hearing people say that the Penguin and Bullpup used the same pilon so does that mean in theory it could carry five Penguins?
