Description: Procione was an Italian torpedo boat of the thirties. She was the second unit of the Orsa class, and like her sisterships, she was laid down in 1936 and delivered in 1938. At the start of the second world war, Procione and her escort group, composed only by her sisterships, were extensively used during the convoy missions in the Mediterranean, as they were one of the few classes made specifically for that role. But after various successful missions, the ship was retired from the late 1940s to the early 1941s in order to receive a small refit, where the eight 13.2 mm machineguns were replaced by an identical number of 20/65 mm Breda cannons. She returned to service shortly after and continued as usual its convoy escort tasks. In 1941, she didn’t see much action in her missions, except for some occasional British submarine attacks. In 5 March 1942, during an usual convoy mission, a transport was sunk by the British submarine Uproar and Procione. Alongside the Spica class torpedo boat, Cigno tried to sunk it with depth charges, but in the end it escaped. Some months later in October, she also defended a convoy from being attacked by a British torpedo bomber squadron, who were not able to score a kill. She also took part in December in the attack on convoy H by a British cruiser, and she was able to survive (unlike the majority of the convoy). During repairs in 1943, she was fitted with the German Fu. Mo. 21/40 G radar, and the previously installed 20/65 cannon was replaced with the newer Scotti 20/70 mm cannon. When the armistice occurred, Procione was stuck in La Spezia port, and due to damage to the propulsive system, she was unable to move. The crew later decided to scuttle it. Procione was finally scrapped in 1947.
