Hello players!
If you have played any planes with the option of dumb bombs (unguided) you probably have seen the option to choose retards bombs and wonderd if its just gaijin hating on these bombs or do they have a use? Well im here to give you breef history and how to use them!
Starting with what are they, they are dumb bombs that have a little parachute connected to them, slowing it dowm and making it more focused towards a downwards trajectory.
So going back in history retarded bomb were used for 2 reason:
More accurate then dumb bombs, aspecially in targeted bombing where every little mm helps.
Giving the bimber time to escape the explosion yield of his bomb.
And how to use them in war thunder? Well, they i will admit they are not as usful as they were in the real world.
But its not to say they dont have a use.
Now if you play cas without any balistic computer, aka not knowing where the bomb will land, you can use them because they almost always have a direct downwards trajectory when dropped while maintaining 180° of plan angle.
Lets say any kind of plane in 6.7, and you dont want to risk yourself with divebombing, you can maintain the 180 on an altitude of about 1000m lettubg you bomb spaa’s, points and so on.
I do not recommend trying to bomb moving targets with them, the retarded bombs are very slow which gives the enemy a lot of time to escape
Thats it, and i hope the info helped you (:
Retarded bombs (this is the actual name for high drag bombs dont flag me) just kinda dont fit “normal” bombing runs in war thunder, they absolutley have their place if someones hiding inbetween some buildings and a normal bomb toss wouldnt be viable.
ive used them a few times when ive not been able to afford precision bombs
Welp in my experince when i drop bombs people hear they turn their turret and start using MG to shoot me and their main cannons and those SPAA will try to elimate AGM or missles.
Well spaa obvioulsy is looking up but if yoa re bombing tanks that are engaging other tanks they often cannot look at you or even move. And even if they can move dropping the bombs low enough still gives them not enough time to move as many vehicles take a bit to move from a standstill.
The main advantage of using retarded over free-fall is usually impact angle.
If you combine it with CCRP to control the precise release point, you can fly low and fast, letting the Ballistic computer handle the drop. With free-fall, the release angle can sometimes result in bombs hitting buildings or hils if you arent careful with your exact attack path, but with retarded bombs, they’ll fall directly down onto the target.
Imo, assuming you’re dropping from fairly low alt, then the time difference between retarted bombs with impact fuse vs free-fall with a slight fuse delay is extremely minimal.
Wouldn’t it be quite risky to get shot down by AA guns or any players like. if literally 1 bullet hit your bomb your aircraft and other bombs will explode in to pieces. Don’t you think it better to just fly very high and drop bombs from a safer distance or probably use the dive-bombing way (my fav way). Or a risky way is to toss your bomb using the CCRP.
Sometimes flying high is more dangerous than flying low and fast. Dive bombing can work well, but can also just result in being immediately nailed by a SAM.
Lofting is another option, though I find is highly dependent on the aircraft being good enough to thorw the bombs far enough to be worth it
It all depends on how you use them, you have the intel advantage you see where everyone is and whats going on in the battlefield; what you can do is lets say you see you have lottle teammates on B and a high amount of enemies woth trajectory towards capturing it, you can drop the bomb early and oncr the bomb get to the ground thwy are already standing there.
They require more skill but are very usful
But how fast you flying? like i normally drop at mach 0.99 and enter supersonic immediate after dropping it because flying at high speed and at low attitude may kinda mess up accuracy sometimes.
Realistically speaking, aircraft that I would be using unguided bombs over guided wepaons are probably like the Harrier and Buc both of which would max out at about mach 0.92-0.94 anyway. Jags probably a bit higher as you probably wont reach supersonic with bombs.
In the Tonka, AB will easily push you over Mach 1 and so you wont be able to release, so id throttle out of reheat or tap the airbrakes and so slow down to 0.95 ish.
