Hallo zusammen! I’m hoping someone here might be able to point me to some good (up to date) Corsair guides/resources. I am not a particularly good pilot, but I under perform even my own low standards in the Corsair.
At this point, I’ve consumed plenty of video from a variety of sources (Jengar, Defyn, Haven, Avar, Mac, Squishface… though he’s Sim… maybe some I am forgetting)… and while the video are entertaining, I really haven’t been able to grasp the nuances of flying the Corsair properly.
Thunderbolts and Mustangs seem to like speed, but the Corsair not so much it seems. I cannot seem to use the platform to its potential at BR 4.3 /5.7 because I’m not particularly good at flying it when it’s not fast.
The 4B is a monster, and I’ve been thinking I might need to fly the -4 at 4.3 to ensure I am not crutching on 2600+ hp and 4x 20mm. I enjoying flying the 1A, 1D… but I think those are a different experience at 2.7-3.0… or am I crazy?
Just thought I would give this a bump… the Corsairs are just painful for me. I am having a real issue getting around the awful high speed performance. I was hoping to “click” with a plane that so many speak highly of… so far no luck.
I’ve been playing the F4U-4 solo and the F4U-1A with my sons while they grind low BR/rank props… and I know they’re supposed to be really strong… but at what I’ not sure.
If you’re having problems at high speed, simply bring the fight to a lower speed by having your opponents follow you up, up to a desired speed.
You mentioned that you enjoyed the -1A, so just fly the -4s the same way, staying fast and then baiting people into shots they can’t take.
The -4B is better suited for lower alt (still should climb in it), the -4 is better suited to higher alt.
You also wrote that you already watched a bunch of videos, so there’s not much to add really. Here’s a couple more videos.
It took me a long time to click with the -4 as well.
With your climbrate being average and your turnrate until low speed also being average, with the annoying amount of compression, I often take the route of energy traps, letting the enemy come to me rather than going all the way down to them if I can see that they’re paying attention. In a plane like a 190 D or even 51C you can do the high-speed guns passes on people that are defending. Not so much the corsair.
Other than that I like forcing headons even with the -4 since the rollrate is nice and it’s not too bad at pulling back in or dodging guns due to keeping enough speed to stay slippery (the Mustang is horrible at both and the F8F really isn’t much better).
Hope things have gone better since you made this post.
