After I research a vehicle and immediately can purchase it after my game, when I have to pick a new vehicle to research and press “secondary weapons” to see if the plane has for example good missiles, the leftover RP vanishes. Because of that bug I keep accidentally wasting the RP. Is this a bug of sorts? Because this has genuinely been so annoying and irritating to just lose 16k rp from a good game just like that.
Restart the game or play another match.

Check your battle reports after a day, it sometimes taked time to reappear. For me, it does reappear.
I made the same mistake as OP did, and my research seemed to be completely voided. Playing another match, like what @Dodo_Dud said, did nothing. At least it’s something you only do once.
It doesn’t reappear, i think gaijin might have accidentally made me go to the normal secondary weapons page of that vehicle instead of having like a “research secondary weapons” so that i can see it without losing all my rp.
I keep a plan (actually a spreadsheet) of the “path” that I am grinding in any particular tree, so that I have already what ever is next. This avoids that problem of giving Gaijin’s wonky process flow an excuse to screw up/me.
