A while ago, back when the panthers were in a br of 5.7, a governor was put onto the Panther A for balance issues.
But now since all panthers are in 6.0, balance is not an issue thus causing the panther A to be redundant. The G is lighter, same speed, better armoured and there is just no reason to play the A over the G. So revert the A’s governor (iirc early panther A’s had no governor with full 700 hp and 56kph top speed) and make it stand out more, instead of being in the G’s shadows.
Its especially meh since the Panther D at 5.3 is far superior to all later 6.0 variants (Panther G, A, F), since its ungoverened. Speed is just the most important core stat fo get a good match. Irl they put the gov into effect to reduce attrition of the transmission. Since when stuff like this is considered to be a thing in a video game?
You have a group of 3x slow af 6.0 Panther tanks which are rarely played. They’re useless, as long as we got the pre production Panther at 5.0 and the D at 5.3 BR with superior acceleration and top speed.
Well, an engine governor is a historical feature, and so it makes sense to respect its presence in game, regardless if the game permits for the engine to be run at max RPMs. Besides, the Panther G should be an upgrade to the Panther A, as that’s how it was intended in reality.
I’d say that adding an earlier version (one which we don’t currently have in-game) would be a decent solution to this issue.
WT is the only videogame which has these anomalies. All other wargames I know make sure later tank versions are somehow better. They don’t think its neccessary to simulate measures which were solely introduced to reduce service hours. Why would you even drive a Panther A or G with 40 km/h top and rather meh acceleration, when there’s the ungoverned Panther D two BR ticks lower.
Well, the argument can go both ways, because in the pursuit of (limited) realism there may end up being some downgrades, the engine deck gun depression fiasco with the Leopard 2 a few months ago for example. While yes the engine governor serves a purely real-world problem that we would never experience in the game, it’s still part of the vehicle itself, and so I personally would prefer it stay under a historical context.
But I can easily see the other side of the argument, and so removing it wouldn’t bother me either.
Later tank versions weren’t always better, though, or at least not for the reasons that can be reliably represented in a game without some RNG bullshit (i.e. XX% chance of engine failing at a start of a battle). Though, there absolutely is a reason to drive the Panther A over the Panther D: the turret rotation speed. This may not be enough for you to select it over the Panther D, but don’t try to act like the Panther A is some direct downgrade over the Panther D.
If it could not be removed easily then I don’t then it should be removed in game. We have the M163s that lost their floatation ability for that reason.
My main issue with stuff like this is consistency, I don’t like when they make exceptions for somethings being historical while denying others.
