what is the actual performance of relikt ERA irl because in game it seems so buffed esp to the point of it stopping a 1780ms tungsten rod to the side hull
ERA isn’t designed to stop rounds it designed to degrade them to the point of the which the actual armour can stop whatever is left i doubt the side hull armour after the ERA is 300mm thick… i seriously doubt any modern tank front plate could withstand a 1000mm KE round because that’s nearly rail gun penetration territory like where do we even get these performance stats for relikt on documents stating that the t90m front plate could stop M829A4 when it was literally built to pen modern ERA and is depleted uranium… atp modern rounds would be completely useless against t90m front plate and all the anti ERA properties just disappear gaijin always go on about showing documents for things to prove there performance just for them to make t90m on paper stop a modern DU round without no proof
Idk about all this, but my theory on why its so overperforming is that gajin formulates its protection as (250mm x its mounting angle= total protection). Where as real life its (Number of protection x its mounting angle=250mm). Granted this is based on nothing and I’m by no means a tank expert this is just my schizo theory that I get to believe in.
In short, the Russian ERA is heavy and works for both APFSDS and HEAT, and you just answered your own question. It reduces the penetrator’s power capacity until penetration is no longer possible, so that answers it.
So exactly what happens in-game.
The first screenshot you provided isn’t ERA protection, that’s you hitting overlapping plates which impacts all tanks in the game [including Leopard 2s].
This is the ERA coverage protection:
And up higher with more air behind the ERA to disrupt the round more:
The ERA isn’t what’s stopping the round on the side, the armor behind the ERA is.
You have air and side armor behind the highly angled ERA [potentially many layers], and 160mm of effective steel; Potentially tracks/wheels as well.
I can’t repeat the side test.
war thunder models ERA as just a magic plate that has the same protection at any spot and angle, this is not how it works in real life, relikt needs to be struck at an angle in order to disrupt kinetic penetrators
yes but a side hull of a tank shouldn’t be stopping modern APFSDS and the type 10 is a self sharpening tungsten round meaning it won’t be degraded as much from ERA and its going way to fast with too much kinetic energy just to be shattered by a bag of ERA
even when flat on relikt still provides 200mm of KE penetration protection, which is just totally false with how it actually works IRL
ahh ok that makes abit more sense but the side still doesn’t any modern APFSDS is making it through the side of the t90m even at a angle with all that relikt it just way too fast and dense to be ‘shattered’ and even a few irl rounds are self sharpening KE reducing the effect ERA has on it such as the type 10 round irl
really it’s just a result of lazy modelling
yeah it literally is i love how somehow a side hull of a tank can absorb a modern APFSDS
This thread that @God_46 brought to light an subject that was ignored for months, or maybe years that could highly improve for a more realistic aspect explosive reactive armor performance in-game, but as I mentioned in the linked thread previously, War Thunder, at this point is not supposed to be the tank simulator, nor the most realistic at this point with competitions in this regard like Gunner, Heat, PC! around and dedicated simulators just a click away, I’m afraid that this and many others aspect that could make the game more realistic will not be implemented, at least not any time soon.
yeah relikt ERA is so overperforming esp from the all the bmpt clips now on reddit of a APFSDS literally just shattering somehow
That doesn’t really help, DU is used because, aside from its density, it erodes in a way that keeps the tip sharp, as apposed to steel that mushrooms.
The issue is that ERA sheers the point off so the penetrator still has to expend an enormous amount of energy reforming the point, that will result in anywhere from 20 to 30% reduction in penetration alone. Not to mention the damage sustained to the round from the shock of impacting with a blunted point.
i meant more for side hull like in the second image where there isn’t enough base armour left so stop whatever is left over from the KE it shouldnt just ‘shatter’ even at a angle aswell as type 10 round is designed to fail ‘gracefully’ instead of squashing the edges of the tungsten tip are designed to break off in a process called adiabatic shear
IRL they mount Kontakt-1 blocks on top of Relikt and say that Relikt is only good in promotional brochures. And they abandoned those fabric pockets because they fall off the tank after some time.

literally lmao
im pretty sure now they are putting the same blocks of the ERA which are on the bmp3 now
