Regenerative Steering Feedback and Discussion

Yes, but that would be just slowing down; rather than choosing to brake one side.

Are you suggesting to add 2 new keys in the settings just to do what was previously possible by simply pressing A and D.

Sorry, but I’m not going to vote for making the controls more complicated.

Yeah it’s more meant to just provide a tighter turning circle instead of just having an insanely quick turnrate

That’s better but still not correct, holding a or D should result in a slow down, not sustained speed.

It works now as slow as 10 km/h…

I see! True.

No. I am suggesting that pressing W + A or D = sustained speed turn, or acceleration at low speeds.

Holding just A or D = steer in the desired direction without engine power, thus reducing speed gently.

Holding S and A or D = slowing and steering. Without locking the brakes.

For the point of brakes, this is of the perspective of a keyboard player, on controller you can choose your braking level to prevent skidding. On keyboard and mouse the driver should brake with an ABS system because you can only choose on or off.

Basically encouraging the use of brake and accelerator to moderate speed and turning radius.

In particular, if you brake while wanting to tighten your turn, the automatic shifting logic fails to downshift, making it impossible to reduce the turning radius!
This is the most inconvenient aspect.

Simply adding a function where pressing the “S” key momentarily downshifts by one gear would likely make controlling the dual-differential system much easier.

I would rather they fix the downshifting mechanic tbh; I often find the tank stays in too high a gear for too long.

I think we should create a button—an option that can be assigned as a shortcut and should be included as a selectable option in the Y multi-purpose menu—to easily switch between the new and old modes within the game(Like the AoA Limit).
This allows players to choose the appropriate mode based on the situation. Compared to replacing the old mode with a single mode, this approach effectively combines the strengths of both the new and old modes, thereby enhancing the overall gaming experience.

It kick in at 1st gear, it doesn’t depend on speed.

No, what I mean is; until today, I believe that, if you pressed only A/D, you still kept gaining speed; but now, you can press only A/D after letting go of W at 10 km/h and it stays at that speed.

I absolutely hate this, specifically the way it’s implemented. Tanks with this feature can’t do CQC anymore. If they’re trying to turn a corner sharply, it’s just a massive understeer into a building, and you die. It makes it more biased, considering the T80s/T90s can turn sharply around a corner at high speeds, but NATO MBTs can’t anymore. If they are going to add this, there needs to be an option to turn it off.

have you tried braking before a corner?

youre driving a 60+ ton vehicle, not a go-kart

i do agree there should be a setting to turn it off for vehicles that can double dif steer or clutch steer

Even braking in the tests doesn’t give me the ability to turn sharply enough. And since when was War Thunder insanely realistic? I say leave the ability to turn decently well at decent speeds around a corner. It also just allows T80s/T90s to turn sharply and drift around a corner whereas Nato MBT’s cant

then you didnt slow down enough.

its still WIP and will be tuned in but just slow to a low gear and you can easily traverse urban maps.

ive tested it myself with a leo 2 and it feels great even in tight maps. able to keep speed up decently, even tho urban fighting does not call for high speed.

they can snap direction faster but will overall be slower on most maps

I’m not sure what your idea of tight enough turns is, but that is not it. Urban maps require fast reaction time and movement, and if you’re taking a corner fast, you don’t have the ability to turn sharply enough. And slowing down, as you said, does not do nearly enough. It still has an insanely wide turning circle.

In the new system, a tank’s turning radius is determined by the gear currently selected in its main transmission.

Simply slowing down isn’t enough; you have to downshift to execute a tight turn.

That’s a major inconvenience in CQC battles. Not good enough to help it.

I think youre just forgetting the sheer mass of a tank. or how fast youre still going.

the tight corners of a map like sweden or rhine can be done easily ar 10-15 mph, which is still running speed for the average human.

Its physically impossible to make a tank snap around a corner without it throwing a track, spinning out or rolling. When people drive CVRTs they are told specifically to not slow down in turns as theres a high risk of rolling as its gearing forces it into a tighter turn radius.

This is what happens to tanks when they turn like people do in War Thunder. (they were ok as far as i know - as in not dead, rolling a tank will bloody hurt)

I do hope we get the option to kick up and down gears again while in auto, we lost that a year ago and will be super useful for regen steer to tighten turns up more.

All major MBTs feature more or less similar systems—whether in the East or the West. Once this system is implemented, most MBTs in the game will be subject to turning radius limitations.
In that sense, wouldn’t fairness in CQC be maintained?

That said, I do agree that the game’s current map design doesn’t really take turning radius limitations into account.
