If they made a 140mm cannon for a tank decades before the SEP V3 why does it still have a 120mm?
Because it was way over the top back then; improved 120mm munitions could get the job done for a fraction of the cost it would take to ditch all hundreds of 120mm guns, replace all turrets, etc.
However, there’s a big step between being able to withstand 3BM42 at any range and even 3BM46 in the fuel tank areas or completely past 1,000m, which isn’t at all over the top, and being vulnerable to these within 500 and 2,000m ranges respectively and nearly ready new munitions within 3,000m ranges.
In my above comment’s attempt at justifying it, it can make some sense; until I remember how greater values had already been achieved 20 years earlier.
And even then, we are coming back to 130-140mm guns now that it’s considered that 120s reached their highest peak in munitions. An equivalent would be us now only upgrading to 122mm guns
