Quick history of the RE 2002:
The Reggiane Re.2002 Ariete was an Italian fighter-bomber developed during World War II by the Reggiane company. It was based on earlier models like the Re.2000 and Re.2001, but used a more powerful radial engine—the Piaggio P.XIX—because Italy had trouble getting enough German inline engines.
The aircraft made its first flight in 1940 and entered service in 1942. It turned out to be tough and reliable, especially for ground attack missions. The Re.2002 was used a lot during the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943.
After the armistice in September 1943, some of these planes were taken by the Germans, while others kept flying with the Italian forces that had switched to the Allied side, in the Aeronautica co-belligerante.
This camo was painted on a RE 2002 of the Aeronautica co-belligerante and it’s on display at “MUSAM” ( Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare ), after it was restored.
This plane was one of the 24 planes left in 1944 bearing the insigna of 102 gruppo - 239 squadriglia - 5 stormo based in Manduria airport.
This camo would rapresent a very important page of italian history and I think it’s quite good looking.
