navy cant get enough of the long range

first aim-174b now this dang

edit: i dont want to clown but this just got released to the public 2 hours ago how only are you bro

Looks to be the Mk 134 Mod 0 motor which is used on the ESSM and AMRAAM-ER and is capable of Mach 4+ when ground launched ( my bug report was accepted for AMRAAM-ER).

Very interesting.

I was scrolling on Reddit and saw this news an hour ago.

It looks remarkably similar to it, but this could be a new version of it considering how new this is vs when the RIM-162 entered service
could be a motor designed off of it too and has completely different internals

This is true.

When US development finally has a budget of yes

From some other sources, it almost seems like a pruned down AIM-174 / SM-6 to fit into a F-35’s payload bay with a dash of ESSM.

While I don’t think it will sport the max range of the 174 and SM-6, this seems more in line with a a larger cousin to the AIM-260 with maybe the 174 still being reserved for sniping AWACSes and such.

I have a feeling this will be the replacement for the AIM-174B, and the 174B will merely just be the stopgap until this enters service. The 174B and 424 are both 13.5 inches in diameter, and they have similar weights, while this has even more range.
Might be a bit out of left field but I feel this might be our first HGV AAM to enter service, considering every other HGV has been a hypersonic ballistic missile like Mako or Blackbeard.

Does that mean it would retain the TVC system on the AMRAAM-ER?
If so this would be huge

We have no idea. 13.5 in diameter AIM-424 vs 10 in diameter ESSM could mean a boatload of differences.

Nice

It is almost 200kg lighter and about 2 inches shorter and both sport the same “In excess of 250NMI” range claim.

Its a lot less missile, especially in regard to wingspan, it sheds roughly 40 inches of wingspan over the 174.

I wonder what they mean by “two-stage”. Just a weird way of saying dual pulse?

I believe they mean different things

with dual pulse meaning that the motor reignites later in flight using the same nozzle and other components

while two stage means first motor burns out and is is dropped away from the missile, before a second separate motor ignites

interesting to think about where all the numbers between 260 and 424 went

According to the USN, they’re both insanely long range missiles. So I don’t know what else to say in regards to that.
