Ray Tracing in War Thunder!

For real, I never had to use a heater for my room over the winter, and that’s without it even being over clocked 😂 It’s the last EVGA one made, I did put the increased wattage BIOS on it too, but it can use like 25% more power, and feels like 50% more heat when turned up all the way LOL 🔥

Also have the i9-12900 KS, with everything turned up all the way it can pull between 700-800 watts at the wall ⚡

I played with Ray tracing and it was allot of lag spikes without spiking GPU usage

Please overclock it and tell me how fast that power connector melts lol.

With Upscaling on Balance, I think I can actually use Ray Tracing!

There’s a small problem though- textures look incredibly blurry xD. Can barely even distinguish the Chinese star decal…

So I wonder… is it worth it?

EDIT: Nah, not worth it. Even with Upscaling on Balance, which looks quite bad even with TPS Sharpness, I get 55-95 FPS; so huge fluctuations… and with ocassional drops to 30-40 FPS.

So yep- I’ll keep Native without RT.

That’s because I think 3060 has older gen “AI cores” that aren’t as good and I think don’t use DLSS 3.
Anything under DLSS 3 or FSR4 is not worth it in my opinion, as bluriness can get really bad.

I’m not 100% sure yet but it seems that RT works nicely in the first match I play but GPU usage and performance plummets after that until game restart. At that point I also get 100% usage on one CPU thread.

7800X3D and RTX 4080, if that matters.

I tested RT now on the devserver, get around stable 60fps in native 4k all settings ultra with AMD 7900XTX and 5800X3D. Only the loading of maps takes a little bit longer now.

Same, they definitely improved the performance a LOT since the last dev server.

I bet it would look better on a rainy or night map. I didn’t notice much difference in the test drive except for ambient lighting from burning tanks.

Explosions would probably look crazy in night battles now that I think about it…

Depends on scenario, like in every RT game.

You can find places where baked shadows + SSreflections looks same like with RT (which is good if you think on it), but there are scenarios and places where RT simply looks more real.

Oh, I meant Upscaling: Balance, not Ray Tracing!

In my opinion, the visual upgrades of Ray Tracing are 100% worth it- in every comparison I’ve made, RT has had a wonderful impact in visuals. However, at least for now, my computer appears to be incapable of enabling the setting reliabily, and Upscaling: Balance has a negative impact that offsets the graphical improvement of RT.

Anyway- I will look forward to upgrading my computer in the future so that I will be able to enable it! RT is very new in War Thunder too, so I don’t know if it’s as opimised as it is intended to eventually become. Some people are commenting it is much more stable on the dev server today, so I will give it a test soo.

I’m running Cyberpunk with insane graphics settings, including maxed-out ray tracing, along with over 1,600 mods. It performs like a dream and looks stunning. However, when I enable RTX in War Thunder at 3280 x 2160 resolution (asus 42" OLED)

My FPS drops from 160 to 80—and when I use tank sights and zoom in, it further drops to 50 FPS. Any tips to improve this?

I have a 4090 as well, which should be able to handle War Thunder on Max Graphics, including RT

Yeah, dont use raytracing in this buggy game, its a shame that its so broken at times

Oh… so RT is indeed simply poorly optimised, I see, so far!

Since it’s a very new addition, I expect them to optimise and polish it over the next months.

I have a 3060, which is less powerful than a 4090, but our performance is similar because my resolution is just 1080p; I go from 160-ish FPS to 75-80, and, as you said, with drops when changing sights, etc.

I am now going to see if it’s true that it’s working better now on the dev server!

@Stona_WT , I have conducted tests on the Dev Server, and I am now getting 103-122 FPS with Upscaling: Quality (which looks very good, unlike Balanced) and Ray Tracing enabled!

I wanted to ask therefore; are the developers indeed working on optimisations for RT for the next update, or is this improved performance on the Dev Server caused by something else on my end?

If this improved performance is translated into the live server, I will finally be able to use Ray Tracing reliabily, even on my RTX 3060!

(120+ on test drive, 103-122 on a match. That’s about 30 FPS higher than I currently get on the Live server with the same settings!)

I am testing more and more- and it definitely appears that the developers are currently working in optimising Ray Tracing. I’m getting 30+ FPS on average on the Dev Server with RT compared to the Live Server; not only on the test drive, but on matches as well.

I am so glad of this! If the developers continue to do such a good job with optimisation, I will definitely be able to enable RT when the major update is released. War Thunder’s team has always done an excellent job at optimising graphical improvements. Ray Tracing’s release came with an uncharacteristical performance drop (it was expected since it’s a huge change), but it was definitely partly due to being a very new and drastic implementation. Now that they are working on the signatura optimisation, it’s getting much better! Yay!

i like to use ssaa more. Dlss mode is too blurred on 5120*2160 monitor. And everyone know it is almost impossible to use ray tracing apart from dlss.
