from my experience, Aim9m is only good when enemy is slow. Firing it at fast moving enemy (like a headon situation) and the missile just miss cuz it doesnt pull hard enough. Pairing it with short lock range, its rough.

I get the best hit rate when the enemy is slow and can’t really flare it away.

With tracking suspension, side shoots are usually reliable kills with aim9m/AAM3. Front or rear are easier to flare.

With gatewidth, only rear or close-range side shots are reliable.

I prefer gatewidth missiles, the best one is the PL-5EII, then magic 2, then PL8B and then R-73. But in a dogfight scenario, the R-73 trumps all by a big margin.

They are of course far from perfect, but still better than the R-73, that used to be better
