Question about the armor material in the abrams

So, i heard from a few different users that the abrams armor has Kevlar inside of it which is supposed to help with not producing spall when penetrated. So basically, is the armor itself a sudo spall liner or nah?

(Not saying that the abrams should get a spall liner before anyone asks. Just specifically the armor itself.)

If i have understood things correctly (I’m not very knowledgeable on the Abrams itself other than what i have read on this forum and some small information searches) the inner most “armor” plates are metal but is designed in a way that catches smaller slower spall and doesn’t produce more spall itself.

A penetrator going through that plate would only push it to the side (like clay) and create very minor spalling at the center (sort of like a “cork” that gets pulled from a bottle).

This short part of this video visually illustrates what i’m trying to put into words (though the armor would not be that thin obviously):

Timestamped to 2:06

So sort of like IF something goes through everything except the last layer it shouldn’t produce more spalling and even likely stop a lot of the already existing spall.

So TLDR:
From what i can find; no, it doesn’t have a dedicated “spall liner” in that sense, but is instead designed to create less spalling inherently.

Huh wack, so would that mean our current implementation of the armor in game is wrong then or that at least the spall should be in a far smaller cone when penetrating?

Likely something like that, but i do not actually know for sure. I have very limited information on the Abrams in general and have zero connection to development of the game so sadly can’t really do anything to influence any change in any direction. Many have tried to get that sort of change to happen but have so far failed due to the lack of sources that live up to Gaijins standard.

Damn, maybe one day lol. Anyhow thanks for lettin me know.

The armor of the Abrams are made with Kevlar Integrated into the armor, if something penetrates the armor the cone of the spall will be the size of a quarter, and then increase to about 2x the size of a quarter. All U.S Made Combat Vehicles have some form of Kevlar or spall material in them.

Do you have any sources (that Gaijin accepts) for that?

Not sure we are allowed to post them. I have seen a couple on discord that shows they did have a layer of kevlar somewhere, but definitely not inner most layer, we can literally see the welding marks in a lot of places. Likely somewhere integrated. It isn’t spall liner but is better than nothing.

sniffs i smell someone with classified documents 🤨

Problem is because it is still in service, specs are classified. There are optics I used in 2007 that are still classified that we never adopted but you can buy the same thing without a couple of the integrated options at bass pro shops… We keep everything classified
