Description: Quarto A5302 was an Italian landing ship made during the Cold War. The first (and only) ship of the class was launched back in 1967 at La Spezia shipyard, and it was planned to be the first unit of a class of five. Unfortunately, the various tests made shortly after the launch highlighted various issues related to the design, and it was judged that it wasn’t viable as a landing ship, with the Italian Navy in the end ordering two American-made LCS with various significant changes over the basic design. Instead, it was initially renamed L9881 and used for transport until 1975, when it got various rather interesting modifications that we will cover later. Initially, the ship, like any other Italian landing craft of the Cold War, had a classic light defense armament composed of a total of two double 40 mm bofors turrets for anti-aircraft duties. So regarding the so-called “interesting” modifications applied back in 1975, the ship was reclassified A5314 and used as an experience ship to test new technologies. It was in this period that it was fitted with two long-range OTOMAT MK1 antyship missiles (but it mantained one double 40 mm bofors turret) and the electronics needed to use them. It was retired from service in 1991 and demolished in 1992 after 24 years of service.
