Proposed Updates to the SQB gamemode

I agree with Nacrazy, the SQB/SRE mode needs some attention to keep it interesting and up to date.

Great suggestion that will bring excitement for many players to have involvement in their Squadron SQB, i think one of the most common problems is that many players don’t wanna play SQB or avoid playing SQB because it’s not rewarding and not worth the time spent playing with others.

I hope Gaijin looks into this idea and have more details to added from their end, SQB is my favorite mode and I hope to see it expand and get so many players attention to increase the level of competition and joy.

As a member of LisW we are fully supporting this initiative and we are asking Gaijin to look into this matter so we can improve the quality of SQB.

Good ideas here. SQB can sometimes be pain and sometimes just crushing. This sounds more fun.

The more I read the more I realise the potential that Squadron battles have to be so much more, from custom Sqb only maps, 8v8 air battles on certain days, even adding in possibly a naval aspect could possible be cool and could be a window for more modern stuff to be added to naval… (maybe). Squadron bonuses would be amazing as well including vehicles researched through participation in squadron battles. Another thing I would like to see is SRE stats. Currently I have vehicles that only show me playing 20-100 battles with them when in reality I’ve played 500+ including sqbs but theres no data for sqbs.

This is hugely needed for the mode I still find it insane with how much more work and dedication it takes to play sqb that i end up with frankly less rewards than regular battles do
It sucks cause this mode is one of the best in the game even if its not perfect
and if there was more incentive to play the mode im sure more people would play it

If i could add my own thoughts is we would love if the times got adjusted slightly since for some of us the matches can go up until 3AM which is too much to expect from members that have a life outside of WT

As a squadron in the top 100-150 I agree with this. We are basicly competeing for nothing other than the moral boost of getting top 100. We lack the ammount of players but the few players we have are pretty active and it would be nice to see that we get rewarded with something so we can keep our players. Otherwise mainly they just go up to higher squadrons for some rewards or for other reasons. It also is rough to face the top squadrons where players are just straight up better than you and take it more serious. This gamemode deffinetly needs some love and attention by gaijin so more players will enjoy it.

I agree to everything said here! Squadron battles is the only reason I still play War Thunder, and it actually gives me a reason to grind different nations for the meta vehicles at each BR. The only issue is that there isn’t as much outreach about it, so it’s harder to find interested players. If there was more incentive to play, it would be amazing to see the growth!

I like all the suggestions listed above and I am willing to provide my own input to the suggested changes and perhaps elaborate a bit more on what has been proposed.

1: In regards to the rewards and incentives, I believe an increase to the Golden Eagle reward for participating squadrons is important. To truly compensate players for their dedication and perseverance I believe that the GE bonus should be as follows: 1st place receives 5000 GE/player, 2nd receives 4000 GE/player, 3rd gets 3000 GE/player, 4th gets 2000 GE/player, and 5th gets 1000 GE/player. These awards would be gifted to all members of the squadrons (provided they acquire points in squadron battle mode and remained in their squad until the end of the season). All subsequent teams within the top 20 on the leaderboard would be entitled to 1000 GE per player to encourage good competition within the top echelon of the mode. Squadrons within the spots 40-20 would be awarded 500 GE/player, and squadrons from spots 100-40 would be awarded 250 GE for their participation.

-Next, Squadron vehicle research. To be honest I don’t know why this isn’t already a thing as the mode is literally called “Squadron battles”… I believe that the same RP multipliers that apply to regular research points in Ground Realistic battles and Air Realistic battles should also apply in the squadron battles mode, only the type of research given is exclusively for Squadron Vehicle research. Example: player destroys 2 enemy targets, gets an assist, and captures a point to earn 1500 RP which researches BMP-2M.

-As for unique decals to show participation, this should need little explanation as this exact feature has been used for the Battle Pass before.

-In addition to GE rewards and Research Point rewards, I also believe that Squadron battles mode should have features prominent in ground and air realistic modes such as battle trophies that, like the other modes are randomly given to players who perform exceptionally in a particular game. However, unlike regular battle trophies, these squadron battle trophies would offer much better odds to receive very valuable items in the game. Things such as 2 days of premium time, inexpensive Marketplace/GE skins for tanks/aircraft, decals for the nation they were playing at the time, or perhaps a fairly high silver lion bonus (200,000-500,000 SL). These would of course be rare but would be yet another feature to help improve people’s participation in this mode.

2: Moving on to squadron identity, I like the proposition to have unique squadron icons or logos that would display on player cards, though I think we can improve on this idea even more.

-I believe that besides displaying squadron info on a players profile, I believe each squadron should have its own profile card with information such as its prior leadership standings in SQB mode, and more customizable options for aesthetics.

-As for squadron advertising, I believe this feature should be implemented along with a general improvement to the War Thunder chat feature. Oftentimes chat in war thunder is difficult or sometimes impossible due to glitches or bugs in the game, and as a result, trying to recruit players or advertise your squadron is nearly impossible.

3: Game structure… There is a lot I want to elaborate on with this.

-Bracket system absolutely needs to be looked into as it is quite common for much less experienced squadrons to face off against routinely top 5 squadrons that vastly outmatch them not only in skill but in vehicle selection and meta.

-Aircraft and helicopters need proper balancing to be fair to all players in a match. Quite often Helicopters at 12.0 or 14.0 are able to engage ground targets from the nearby heli spawn point less than 5 seconds into the game leading to entire ground teams being annihilated extremely early. The introduction of higher tier SPAA has slightly helped the balance, though I believe from now on all air vehicles should spawn quite far from the ground battlefield in order to let the ground targets properly engage each other before the air has a chance to destroy everyone.

-Additionally, at lower tiers (9.0 down) I believe all aircraft regardless of type or utility should spawn on the airfield. I understand that large strategic bombers and dive bombers take much longer to get off the airfield, however, the ability to spawn in the air at altitude with speed has created an environment where strike aircraft have no practical use over fighters and bombers. As this mode is based on ground realistic battles strike aircraft should have much more utility over say a Ju 288c or Tu-2.

Lastly, Squadron Battle mode should have its own unique vehicle balance for battle ratings. A prime example of the gross imbalance in this mode is the Soviet BI rocket powered plane at 6.7 which absolutely destroys every other aircraft at the BR regardless of the skill difference between pilots. It is simply unmatched at its tier in its effectiveness. (Even at 7.0 and 7.3 there simply isn’t a plane that can challenge it.) To top things off, this vehicle is extremely rare and very expensive on the Gaijin Marketplace meaning most players cannot afford to get it leading to top squadrons who have accounts with it dominating over lesser squads. This exact problem is also evident with vehicles such as the Tu-2 (Beta test plane) which sits at BR 4.7 while having the same ordinance and weapons options as the Tu-2S at 5.3.

Subtle changes like to these factors would greatly improve this game mode and make it much more appealing to average war thunder players who want to play the game competitively. I believe the best way to implement these changes would be to make an official game update centered around competition in War Thunder.

locking vehicles behind squadron battles is not a good thing imo, all for increasing rewards though, just not exclusivity.

You could also make rare vehicles from the market store available for rewards, if you don’t like squad exclusivity.

As an outsider, the first thing that needs to change is squadrons themselves. The entire squadron system just isn’t very well explained, and the “competitive” side is kind of buried.
