Background and History
VM Rudolf Eglhofer aka FGS Hiddense is a Soviet build Project 1241RE missile corvette which served as apart of Volksmarine in the final years of the Cold War as well as beyond East Germany and was of 5 vessels of her type to serve in the Volksmarine, to be honest there isn’t much to talk about her in terms of her service, yet she is still a unique vessel however this due to the flags she flew during her service.
Rudolf Eglhofer was laid down by Petrovsky Shipyard in Leningrad in 1984 and was not long before she came in to service with the Volksmarine in 1985 and her first 5 years would be reflective of her service where she really didn’t do anything significant and in 1990 with the Reunification of Germany she was transferred over to the Deutsche Marine and was renamed to her modern name of FGS Hiddensee with the pennant number P6166 however her service with Germany was near its end as she was decommissioned from Deutsche Marine in 1991 and was transferred to none other than the US Navy where she retained the name of Hiddensee under the name of USNS Hiddensee which made her a bit odd as a vessel built in the Soviet Union that served in the US Navy she was commissioned into the US Navy in 1992 and she would serve for 4 years however this was not actually due to any issue of her being a foreign vessel but was a result of budget cuts in the US Navy however her fate would not be of the scrap yard but instead she was opened then as a museum ship in battleship cove. Sadly within more recent times the ship condition began to deteriorate and was eventually closed off to the public due a result of a lack of funding to preserve the ship, by 2023 this would doom the ship as the continued lack of funding led to the final decision to let the ship go from battleship cove and in October of 2023 she was towed away for scrapping.
As a Project 1241RE class vessel she was armed with 4 KT-138E P-15 Termit (SS-N-2 Styx) anti-ship missile launchers with 2 per side of the ship facing forwards for her anti ship missiles, 1 57mm/59 AK-176M naval gun as her primary gun, 1 quad FAM-14 Strela 2 (SA-N-5) SAM launcher, and 2 6 barred AK-630 30 mm gatling guns that completed her armament, she also came equipped with PK-16 chaff launchers.
