The Project 12081 “Vyuga” was a unique Soviet armored river artillery ship developed during the late Cold War for operations on large inland waterways such as the Amur River along the Soviet-Chinese border. It was essentially an experimental improvement of the earlier Project 1208 river artillery boats, designed to provide heavy firepower and armored support for border troops and river patrol forces.

Background and Development
Work on heavily armed river gunboats began in the Soviet Union in the late 1960s, when the design bureau Almaz (TsKB-5) started developing a new class of armored patrol vessels capable of supporting ground forces along rivers and protecting remote frontier regions. The result was Project 1208, a series of heavily armed river artillery ships that entered service beginning in 1975.

These ships were unusual because they used tank turrets as naval weapons, a concept the Soviets had experimented with since World War II on river monitors. By installing tank guns on a ship, designers could create a vessel capable of delivering powerful direct fire support against shore targets, armored vehicles, or enemy boats.

During the early 1980s, Soviet engineers experimented with an improved variant of the class. This upgraded design became Project 12081, and the single ship built under this project was named “Vyuga” (meaning Blizzard).

Construction
The only ship of the Project 12081 type, MAK-11 Vyuga, was built at the Khabarovsk Shipyard in the Soviet Far East.

  • Laid down: 26 April 1982
  • Launched: 20 August 1983
  • Commissioned: 17 August 1984

Because it was constructed near the Amur River basin, the vessel was intended to operate directly in the region where it was built, supporting Soviet border troops and naval forces stationed there.

Design and Armament
Project 12081 retained the basic hull of the earlier Project 1208 ships but incorporated several experimental systems and modifications.

The vessel displaced roughly 390 tons standard (about 450 tons fully loaded) and measured about 55 meters long. It was powered by three M-504B diesel engines, allowing a top speed of about 23 knots with an operational endurance of around 540 nautical miles at cruising speed.

What made the ship stand out was its extremely heavy armament for a river craft. Its weapons included:

  • Two 100mm D-10 tank guns mounted in armored turrets
  • 30mm AK-630 close-in weapon system for defense against aircraft or missiles
  • Igla surface-to-air missiles

The Project 12081 variant also tested additional technology such as the “Aquilon” combat laser system and the ability to fire 9M117 Bastion guided missiles from the 100mm guns.

These features made the ship effectively a floating armored artillery platform, capable of supporting infantry, engaging shore targets, and defending itself against aircraft.

Service
Unlike the earlier Project 1208 vessels, only one Project 12081 ship was ever built. It served primarily on the Amur-Ussuri river system, an area that was strategically important due to tensions between the Soviet Union and China during the Cold War.

I didn’t even know there existed an improved variant of this class. +1 for sure!

soviets know how to make a gun boat
also Aquilon combat laser weapons complex would be interesting to see in game
