Hello guys, I hope you’re doing great. I’ve been playing War Thunder for about 7 months now and I got to tier 3 in German ground and air, tier 3 in USSR air, and tier 3 in US ground. The game is starting to lose its fun because I’m just grinding different tech trees, and it’s honestly boring me even though I really like the game — both Air AB and Ground RB.
So I was thinking about getting a premium vehicle to maybe bring some fun back and help me grind one nation, either air or ground. I don’t have any GE (blew it all on tank upgrades the first day I started playing) and I also don’t have any event vehicles (I was never good enough to finish the events on time or gather enough points).
I have around 25€ to spend on video games, and I want to hear your advice, guys. I’m planning to maybe buy a premium vehicle during the Christmas sale that could help solve this “problem” I’m having with the game.
I also don’t really have a specific favorite nation that I want to max out first, nor am I too attached to Ground RB or Air AB — I simply enjoy the game for what it is. Still, I do have a few long-term goals for different nations: for Germany I’d love to eventually get the Eurofighter and Tornado IDS SLE in air and the Wiesel in ground; for the US I like the idea of the A-10 in air (but I don’t think I’d go much beyond 10.0 BR in ground to be honest). For France I’d really like the Mirage 4000 and the Rafale C F3, and for the USSR my dream vehicles are the Su-30SM, Su-27SM, and MiG-29SMT. These are more like passion goals rather than a strict grind path since I mostly play out of love for tanks and aircraft.
I’d really appreciate it if you read and answered. Just keep in mind that I’m fairly new to the game, and I play it for fun and out of passion for tanks and aircraft.
So, you want to reach top tier in general. Fair enough. You wont be first nor last.
My two cents:
- focus one nation at time. its the fastest way to reach top tier.
- most efficient way is to get premium vehicle and premium time.
- if you cant afford both premium time and premium vehicle and you plan to actively play, premium time beats premium vehicle as you get premium bonuses with everything you play, not just the premium vehicle.
- if you cant afford both premium time and premium vehicle and you do not plan to actively play, premium vehicle beats premium time. if you decide to take a break, premium vehicle will be waiting for you in garage, unlike premium time.
- i strongly advise against jumping straight to top tier. you will simply get lost. learn how to properly manage energy with props, and work your way up.
- spading a vehicle gives you bonus free RP.
- spading a low tier vehicle is faster than you think.
- take a break once you will start to feel being burned out.
- keep an eye out on events such as current one. By simply playing appropriate mode, you should be able to get a event vehicle easily. keep in mind that unless explicitly labeled as premium, theses do not have premium bonuses to research.
- join a squadron that focuses on vehicle research. that way you will passively gain squadron RP just by actively playing. It takes what, 3 months or so to reach a top tier vehicle, that way you can bypass grind and go to modern jets (but once again, I strongly advise agaisnt this).

its shame you missed the anniversary sales, where both GE and packs get 50% discount. oh well, theres always a next year and by then you will hopefuly know what you want from the game.
I saw the sales i just didnt want to spend any money on a video game, at least i didnt feel like it at that moment…

Just a warning the queues might be really long for higher tier arcade battles for planes.
Both the 9.7 premium mig 21, su11 and mig15bis ish are all really good and within your price range roughly.
There should be some sales in December if i’m not mistaken.
As an aside to this - you will need LOTS AND LOTS of SL - and one way to get this is to turn off auto-repair, and play across several nations and modes - allowing damaged vehicles to repair for free.
You can still concentrate on 1, but it is also true that playing other nations will give you more game experience with your common opponents, and that plus playing other modes (ground & naval) will give you the bank balance you are going to need :)

The best investment you can do is to buy premium time. It’ll give you 50% RP and SL boost and free repair, so you can reach vehicles you want much faster. Maybe on Christmas sale it will has discount.
If you already have premium time and you are looking for some premium vehicle - take in account that you’ll have only 1 vehicle in your lineup which is much higher than the BR you have reached, so you will have to play “1 respawn”.
For ground - take a look at:
France:
- Somua SM - Good armor, fast reload and good shell. France has very strong 7.7 lineup, but high risks to face 8.7 tanks.
- AMX 30 Super - the best AMX 30 with perfect mobility.
Soviet:
- T55 AM-1 - U’ll often play vs 8.0 where it is strong, comfortable and out of competition.
German:
- Turm 3 - good mobility, stabilized cannon, 30mm autocannon, but “paper” armor.
For the soviet air tree, the SU-11 is quite good, broken if you know how to play with your energy and i think it is not that expensive. However since it is a GE premium you will have to wait for the GE sale to get it.
Did some calculation, if you wait for the 50% sales, you can get the SU-11 for 33€, if you buy 5k and 2.5k GE.

A premium vehicle isn’t going to make the game any “funer”. You will just do better at the “War Accountant” part of the game.
