History

Polizia di Stato (State Police) - the Italian national police was first created in 1861 with the unification of Italy. Until 1981, the Italian police were considered a branch of the army and reported to the Ministry of the Interior. In this regard, until the 1980s, the Italian police were armed with various weapons, including armored vehicles.

After the war, several units of the Italian Army obtained various armored vehicles from CEM camps, which they quickly restored. Among them were M13/40 and L6/40 tanks, AB41, AB43, and Lancia Lince armored cars and L3 tankettes. All of them were transferred to the public order units of the Carabinieri corps and the state security agents (renamed Arma di Carabineri and Polizia di Stato, respectively, after the proclamation of the Republic in 1947). Since many of these units had fought in the war, they were proficient in handling these vehicles.
By 1950, the state police had 300 armored cars in service, including the AB41. They were distributed among 45 companies and primarily participated in parades and exercises. The only time the AB41s were used by the police was during the escalation of the conflict between Yugoslavia and the city of Turin, but there they were used only for situational awareness. After 1954, all armored cars were sold for scrap or sold to museums and private collections.

Decal Description
The decal depicts the state police crest: a gold (or yellow) eagle with a crown above and a red shield on the chest with the initials RI (possibly from Regno d’Italia - Kingdom of Italy). Below is the Latin inscription “Sub Lege Libertas” - Freedom within the Law, the state police motto. This image was often painted on the front upper armor plate of AB41 and Lince armored vehicles. It is also found on some police paraphernalia.
