Please add Ultra Low / Legacy Mode for old Intel HD Graphics users

Hello everyone,

I am Huraira, a War Thunder player for over 1 year. I am writing this post with a very heavy heart.

I play War Thunder on a Dell Latitude E5440 laptop with Intel HD 4400 integrated graphics and 12GB RAM. I know this is old hardware, but I always found a way to enjoy this game. I manually edited config files, disabled shadows, clouds, sky rendering, changed renderer to OpenGL — literally everything possible just to keep playing.

I never gave up because I love this game. The Su-33, the air battles, the details — War Thunder gave me some of my best gaming memories.

But since the Heavy Cavalry update, the game crashes immediately when any match starts — even Test Flight. I have tried:

✖ All graphics set to minimum/ultralow
✖ Shadows, clouds, sky all disabled
✖ OpenGL renderer
✖ Shader cache cleared
✖ Full reinstall
✖ Minimal client (22.5GB)

Nothing works. The game crashes the moment a match loads.

I am not here to complain. I am here because I care.

My humble request to Gaijin:

  1. Please add an “Ultra Legacy Mode” or “Potato Mode” for very old Intel HD 3000/4000 series GPUs
  2. Please consider low-end hardware players in future optimizations
  3. Even 15-20 FPS stable would be enough for us — we just want to play

There are millions of players in developing countries like Pakistan, India, and others who cannot afford gaming PCs but love War Thunder with all their heart. Please do not forget us.

I had to say goodbye to War Thunder today. It is genuinely painful. I hope someday I can come back — either with better hardware or when Gaijin adds legacy support.

Thank you for this amazing game. I will never forget the time I spent flying my Su-33.

With respect,
Huraira-Bhatti

Sadly, as time goes on your hardware is going to become unusable.
Windows & Linux are starting to leave it behind, & now War Thunder.

2013 laptop is rough, and I understand if you can’t upgrade to a newer machine with a newer GPU at this time.

Gaijin did announce a few years ago that they’ll be removing official support for older integrated GPUs as well… not saying it’s good or ideal, just repeating that news.

Thank you for your honest reply AlvisWisla. I understand that old hardware eventually gets left behind — it is the nature of technology. I just wanted Gaijin to know that there are still players out there trying their best with what they have. Maybe someday I will get better hardware and return to War Thunder. Until then, blue skies to everyone. o7
