I just can’t. I believe it sucks and I know that I suck with it.
It can’t dogfight. It can’t bomb. It is pretty bad at boom-zooms. I’ve even tried sim battles which is where I’ve had least success with it. It’s just abysmal.
Any missile will take it out. There are planes that are faster, more agile, with better missiles than it at lower BRs. How the hell did we get here?
How do you use this terrible thing in sim battles?
I’m not talking to you after last time bro.
Happy new year to you too man
Fly low, radars at that BR are usually buns.
Though why sim if you can’t do realistic (no offense intended)?
All the Harriers, debatably Jaguars, Mirage, T-2, F-105
All of those are worse than the MiG-21S.
That MiG is meant to be played in a passive manner, thanks to the 16v16 format you cannot afford to get in to a dogfight.
Also launch the R-3R in the headon at 1km or so, the enemy will eat it half the time.
And be aware of your surroundings for incoming IR missiles
Only about 30% of the games I play I get a few dumb enemies that will just head-on me. And that’s the ONLY thing the MiG-21S R13-300 is good at
Everybody else plays extremely low and purely dogfights. People even use hills and ground creases to avoid lock-ons and be unspotted.
It’s genuinely an aircraft that relies on bad enemies
I’m guessing that you bought high BR jets and skipped a couple of ranks/BR’s?
I always recommend playing through the lower BR’s to learn the basics in a way that makes them almost second nature at the time you get to radar and IR guided missiles. By jumping up in BR buy purchasing planes you skip a lot of that and it can then be e bit overwhelming with all the thing you have to keep track of at the same time.
That’s when you glide in at 5-6km altitude and dive down to missile them when they are tunnel visioned on the dogfights.
Don’t rush in, i personally hang back a bit to let the first fireball of engagements happen and then swoop in when the enemies are to focused on other players to notice you. (Edit: the keen vission skill also helps a lot in these cases)
Even the best players can get tunnel visioned into dogfights and not notice you diving in on them.
I’m an 8.0-9.0 jet bomber player. Otherwise 6.0 Yak player. I’ve looked at many tutorials for the MiG-21S R13 and I genuinely cannot play it one bit. The radar doesn’t lock 85% of the time.
In fact, if an ally is anywhere near the beam it’ll just snap onto them WITH ABSOLUTE EASE instead of the plane I’m B-lining on. And this is when both the enemy and said ally are perpendicular to me. I don’t understand how I track allies so well but enemies barely.
I don’t think the R-3Rs are good to be thrown in a long range dive when any slight turns can dodge them. If someone is focused on a dogfight they’ll naturally dodge it most likely (like I have sometimes with enemy radar guided missiles lol). – Only thing I’m unsure about is if it’s better to toss them at a high dive speed or just at the peak of the initial dive turn, since the faster they go the worse they’ll turn.
That just sounds like most radars at that BR. They are very basic compared to modern ones. They also tend to be confused by ground clutter a lot more.
They are ment to be shot from behind or from the front of a plane, they only have 10G of pull so they aren’t ment for dogfight like situations, the best you can do when it’s a side profile shot (other than avoiding it in the first place) is to lead the missile. i.e. lock the radar and start the track but before firing you turn sharply in the direction the plane is flying so that the missile is headed towards where the plane is going to be when the missile gets there instead of where the plane currently is.
Additionally: They, as well as your radar, are easily confused by the ground, in those situations it’s better to user the IR ones.
For early radars in general you can think of them as large flashlights that see the world in black and white, when it hits nothing it sees white and when it hits something it sees black and the further away something is the lighter it becomes. So if a plane is against the ground or a mountain then that black dot your radar sees is going to be WAY harder to detect against the super dark gray backgrund.
Generally, as soon as the booster goes out the missile slows down rather fast, so it’s very situational how you want to fire it (this goes for most missiles).
All of those are worse and or at a equal or higher BR
Some of them are at lower BR in Sim battles
Harriers are the same BR and definetly slower
Jaguar GR1 is the same BR and is weaker all round bar missile performance
T-2 is the same BR, though granted, probably should be 10.0
All Mirages III & V are higher BRs
F-105 is a higher BR
