History:

  • The construction of the Chilean Mowag Piraña was carried out by Industrias Cardoen and FAMAE (Fabricas y Maestranzas del Ejercito de Chile) in the early 1980s. Industrias Cardoen was a Chilean defense company, owned by Carlos Cardoen. This version of the Piraña was fitted with a Kuka turret equipped with an Oerlikon KBA 25mm autocannon. that has a periscope or aiming lens to shoot at the target. It is used to destroy other light vehicles, helicopters, planes, ships and infantry. uses armor-piercing and high-explosive ammunition. Chile was one of the few countries that had the license from Mowag to be able to build the Pirañas locally, thus building several of these vehicles in different configurations and different types of weapons. This specific version has been seen on very few occasions in military parades or events of the Chilean army, so it is presumed that there are few units with this weapon configuration. Currently this and other versions are still in operation in the Chilean army.

There was an occasion where one of these vehicles was seen carrying a laser warning system (LWS) that warns you if you are being laser-locked which helps the crew to get to safety or throw smoke grenades to hide, which provides a small aid to the survival of the vehicle.
