Introduction:
After trials were conducted with the CV90 CZ and CV90 CZ r, the CV90 Mk. IV would later be trialed by Czechia with EVPÚ’s CMS-1 independent commander sight, and in 2022, Czechia signed a contract for 246 CV90s based on the Mk. IV. Hägglunds will be producing the initial batch consisting of 39 PBVP CV9030CZ, with production then being moved to VOP CZ in Czechia. Empty hulls will be made at Hägglunds and shipped to VOP CZ, which will put together the vehicles locally. The PBVP CV9030CZ also features the new D-series turret instead of the older E-series turret that was on the CV90 Mk. IV was trialed in 2021. The turrets for these vehicles will also be produced in Czechia.
History:
The Czech Republic’s fleet of BMP-2s was announced in the 2010s as needing to be replaced in the future, and multiple companies tried to win the contract, with BAE Systems Hägglunds being one of them. The first two prototypes would be made and unveiled in 2017 at IDET 2017, held in Brno, Czech Republic. These two prototypes were the CV90 CZ and CV90 CZ r; both of these would be trialed by the Czech military against the ASCOD 2, KF31 Puma, and PUMA IFV. The CV90s came out on top, but the ASCOD 2 would be revised for the trials held in 2021. At these trials, a CV90 fitted with EVPÚ’s CMS-1 independent commander sight would be trialed. It went up against the KF41 Lynx and the revised ASCOD 2. In 2022, it was announced that the CV90 Mk. IV had been chosen as the replacement for the Czech Republic’s fleet of BMP-2s. But it was not until 2025 that we would get to know the exact version of the CV90 Mk. IV had been picked.
Since a basic CV90 Mk. IV had been trialed in 2021, just fitted with a new Czech-manufactured commander’s sight; speculation started to float around about this being the CV90 Mk. IV configuration chosen. This would be backed up by the same CV90 trialed in 2021 being at NATO Days 2023, being displayed with Czech markings. AT NATO Days 2025, a CV90 would once again appear with Czech markings displayed by VOP CZ and with the CMS-1 sight. This time, the sight was on a mast that could be raised and lowered instead of the fixed height that the 2021 trialed CV90 had. Once again, this caused speculation that the CV90 was chosen to replace the BMP-2.
At IDET 2025, it was rumored that the CV9030CZ, as it had been designated, would be revealed. And the rumors were correct: there was a CV90 at IDET 2025, and it had the new D-series turret with Iron Fist APS and the CMS-1 sight. So that settled all the rumors then, right? Wrong. The CV90 at IDET 2025 was, in fact, not a CV90 Mk. IV, it was actually a CV90 Mk. IIIC, a derivative version that came from the Dutch CV90 MLU program. This caused a bit of confusion online, as everyone thought a CV90 Mk. IV was being displaced, and to an untrained eye, that is what the CV90 Mk. IIIC looks like. But all the rumors would later in 2025 be put to rest with the CV9030CZ being unveiled at BAE Land Systems Hägglunds.
Several configurations of the CV90 have been ordered for the Czech army, with the PBVP (CV9030CZ) being one of those variants. This variant was the first one to be unveiled in 2025. A first batch for quality control will be produced at Hägglunds, while the remaining vehicles will be put together by VOP CZ locally in Czechia. Only the empty hulls will be supplied by Hägglunds; everything else is set to be produced domestically by around 20 different companies. The complete fleet of CV90s should be finished around 2030. An interesting change that is happening is the retirement of the Perking’s X300 transmission that has been in use on almost all CV90 variants. It is to now be replaced by the Allison 4040 MX transmission as it is more future-proof than the ageing X300 transmission. The production change is set to be done in 2028, and the PBVP is allegedly one of the first batches of CV90s that will feature this new transmission.
The variants of the CV90 that will be in service with the Czech army will be designated as follows:
- PBVP — IFV variant
- PBV-V — Command variant
- PBV-Pz — Recon variant
- POV-DP — Forward observation variant
- POV-Ž — Engineering variant
- POV-V — Recovery variant
- POV-Zdr — Ambulance variant
