HISTORY
This vehicle in this configuration was first publicly shown in late 2016 as a prototype integration between Patria and Kongsberg Defence, with Kongsberg arranging live demonstrations in Norway at their own firing range at Hengsvann. The testing focused on validating the low-recoil 30mm chain gun on an 8x8 wheeled platform. The setup emphasizes cost-effective upgrades, turning an basic armored personnel carrier into a light infantry fighting vehicle capability by adding firepower equivalent to helicopter-derived weaponry, often paired with anti-tank guided missiles, however I haven’t seen this specific vehicle being tested with any of those. This vehicle’s fate is uncertain, but it was never adopted nor tested by any nation and remains a technology demonstrator used to show the possibility with the Patria vehicles and Kongsberg weapon stations for potential future customers.
The Patria AMW is built in Finland, Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace is a co-owner of the Finnish patria company with 49.9%. The AMW stands for Armored Modular Vehicle and is an multi role vehicle with 8x8. It is designed and produced by Finland and its Patria company. Development for a new modular vehicle started back in 1995, and trough the years many different vehicles were made, but around 2004 this variant of the patria was introduced and produced. The Kongsberg Protector RT60 is a market-leading crewless turret for medium calibers. It was developed by the Norwegian firm Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace and the different versions of these towers have been used by a number of nations worldwide. This specific series, RT which stands for “Remote Turret” comes in several variants RT20, RT30 and RT60. The RT60 model is then the AFV variant in this family, and this tower can have a number of extra things integrated, such as active protection system and CIWS to name a few.
The M230LF cannon chambered in 30x113mm can fire following ammunition;
-
M789 High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) - A multi-role round with fragmentation, blast, and shaped-charge effects for anti-personnel, light armor, and structures. It’s the primary combat round, effective up to 3,000 meters.
-
XM1211 High Explosive Proximity (HEP): A proximity-fuzed airburst round designed for anti-air and C-UAS roles, detonating near targets to maximize fragmentation.
-
XM1223 Multi-Mode Proximity Airburst (MMPA): An advanced programmable airburst round for countering drones and other aerial threats, with modes for proximity or point detonation.
-
XM1198 HEDP (or similar variants): Enhanced HEDP rounds mentioned in dual-feed configurations for anti-armour.
IN GAME
This would probably be implemented as an light tank/spaa, it’s performance against armored vehicles is pretty situational, but lighter armored vehicles such as ifv’s like cv90, boxer, vbci’s and other lightly armored vehicles and spaa’s it will be devastating. Its HEAT rounds can penetrate 50mm at 2.5 kilometer, but it also has acess to rounds like XM1211 High Explosive Proximity & XM1223 Multi-Mode Programmable Proximity Airburst which significantly increases it’s performance against air targets, it will eliminate every drone that comes in it’s way, and it will shoot down most of the low flying helicopters and planes. The programmable ammunition also gives it the ability to potentially ignite the ammunition stowage or severely damage lighter tanks hiding behind hill’s or obstacles with tiny parts of their hull exposed. With third generation NVD, stabilization and lock on air target with lead indicator this could be a fun and challenging vehicle.
