Panavia Tornado (UK versions) - Technical data and discussion

Hmm… interesting, figured it would punch of both by default. Thank you

@Morvran

Would you recommend the Gr.1 or Gr.4 for sim? I only want to spend the SL on 1.

GR.1 is at 11.7 compared to the GR.4 at 12.3 so in theory the GR.1 is better as it sits at a lower BR.

at 12.3, blue side is super dominant in sim so you can easily do all the PVE you want, plus you get 9ms with hmd which is super nice for off bore launches

I just don’t want to deal with Fox 3 and irccm in a tornado

Yeah, both are playable

GR1 can be tricky because you are dealing with MLDs at a lower BR and Redfor is quite strong at that BR with Bluefor not really being played much until the 12.0 bracket but it’s certainly playable. Seagles are quite good fun to mess about with too

GR4 is fine, Bluefor is quite strong at 12.3 and the FLIR is quite handy. Plus the better defensive suite does help quite a bit. Might be a tad over BRed these days, but certainly playable in ASB. If/when we get Brimstones, they’ll be fun to mess about with and we can finally get vengeance on the convoys.

So TLDR, you cant really go wrong at the moment with either.

11.3/11.7 is rather dominated by Redfor

12.3/12.7 Bluefor is quite strong. (Though I usually found in the 12.7 lobbies that it was premium F18s Vs premium F18s constantly)

So actually the GR4 is probably the easier of the 2 at the moment

But you also have aircraft with better radars so terrain masking is harder… So flip flops quite often

Not that you really want to ever fire a 9M in HOBS 🤣

I see Tornado lacking brimstone is laughable.

I think I’ll try the Gr.1 for now. At least you can out run everything.

For the most part. yeah.

Except the Mig-23s, which are faster, especially if you are running a lot of fuel, which I recommend always running max + tanks

Ooooh, was just having a read through the changelog again and if im not mistaken this change should be pretty good for the Tornado

If this does what I think it does. The Tornado should no longer become a totally unflyable brick with any damage to the elevators.

But it’s a brick even with them lol.

It puts the F-104 to shame with even the slightest damage

iirc, the Tornado should actually be quite a tanky aircraft, lots of redundancy, but its easily one of the most fragile aircraft I fly reguarly

Meanwhile the F-5 tanking 1000 lbs bomb shrapnel, 5 30mm HE rounds and a 9L detonation like nothing happened.

Yeah… the F-5 survivability is just dumb

Yes I have an F-5E now and I can confirm it’s just goofy.

And the flight performance is just as goofy. Can’t be touched by anything at 11.0 basically.

Depends on where I get hit in my experience, I’ve taken some insane damage and kept flying just with the elevons and basically no wings. Other times I get grazed in the fuselage and it falls out of the sky

I find with the Tornado specifically 2 main problem areas for “partial damage”

  1. I take a hit, any hit, to any where on fuselage and I loose 1/3 of my engine power, if not more, Even on max reheat the best speed I can achieve is like mach 0.8

  2. Any damage to the elevators locks them up, resulting in nearly no pitch control. Ive got a clip of this not that far above, 1 elevator is black but attached, no other discernable damage, but alas, no control, even from the remaining undamaged elevator.

but yeah, i’ve landed some pretty damaged tonkas before too. Once lost part of my wing, managed to evade the F-4S that shot it off, when he noticed me running gave chase, I dodged his missile but went into a flat spin, so peeled off, I recovered, he gave chase again and eventually i made it back to base. Was hilarious recoverying from that flat spin with only half a wing

But ultimately, War Thunders Damage model for aircraft need replacing at this point

Dont know what they keep doing to our aircraft but they keep making it so when you get a yellow elevator itll lock up and not allow you to pull more than a g. The sea vixen never had this problem when it was first introduced but it was then added later on. Same thing happens on the tonkas.

Which is why im hoping the above changes linked from the update changelog might hopefully fix it
