War Thunder Aircraft Suggestion: Panavia Tornado ADV (Royal Saudi Air Force)
Introduction
The Panavia Tornado ADV, operated by the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF), represents a formidable air defense fighter tailored for long-range interception. Based on the Tornado F.3 variant, this aircraft was introduced to the RSAF in 1989 as part of the Al-Yamamah arms deal, ensuring Saudi Arabia’s airspace security. This suggestion highlights the Saudi Tornado ADV’s capabilities, making it an exciting addition to War Thunder.
History
The Tornado ADV in the Royal Saudi Air Force
The Tornado ADV (Air Defense Variant) was a key asset in the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) from its introduction in 1989 until its retirement in 2011. It played a significant role in modernizing Saudi Arabia’s air defense during a critical period.
Acquisition and Entry into Service
On 26 September 1985, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom signed the Al-Yamamah arms deal, which included the purchase of 24 Tornado ADV aircraft, alongside weapons, radar systems, and a pilot training program. The RSAF received its first Tornado ADV on 9 February 1989, officially integrating it into the air defense fleet.
Operational Service
• 1991 Gulf War: During Operation Desert Storm, the RSAF deployed Tornado ADVs to secure Saudi airspace. The aircraft flew 451 air defense sorties, operating alongside RSAF F-15 Eagles to counter potential threats from Iraq.
• Peacetime Operations: Outside of wartime, the Tornado ADV conducted regular air patrols, training missions, and participated in joint exercises, ensuring RSAF readiness for any potential threats.
Modernization and Retirement
In 2006, Saudi Arabia announced a program to upgrade both its Tornado ADV and Tornado IDS fleets. These upgrades were intended to extend their operational service until 2020. However, the RSAF had already begun transitioning to the Eurofighter Typhoon, which offered superior air defense capabilities.
By 2011, the Tornado ADV was officially retired from RSAF service, with the Typhoon fully taking over its role.
