Today we’ll talk about the R-27 missiles. There are only four types of missiles in the game: the R-27T(ET) and the R-27R(ER). Essentially, the game lacks variety:
- The R-27P is a missile with a 9B1032 passive radar homing head, designed to engage radio-emitting air targets while also defeating aircraft deploying active jamming devices. Launch range is 72 km.
- The R-27EP is a missile with a 9B1032 passive radar homing head and an extended launch range, designed to engage radio-emitting air targets while also defeating aircraft deploying active jamming devices. Launch range is 110 km.
- R-27AE - an inertial guidance system with autopilot correction via a radio channel from the carrier, featuring a 9-B-1103 (?) multifunctional Doppler monopulse active seeker. The active radar seeker was developed by NIO-3 of the Instrument-Making Research Institute (the future Agat Research Institute) as part of the Agat research project. Radio correction was intended for the initial flight phase. The research project reached the stage of missile flight development tests, but this work was not further developed within the K-27(E) project. The scientific and technical groundwork gained in the 1980s was used to develop an ARGS for a new generation of air-to-air missiles (source - Su-27 fighter…). However, in the 1990s press, the existence of a K-27 missile variant with an ARGS was taken for granted.
Radar seeker operating modes:
- fully autonomous (active) based on initial target designations without support from other radars;
- inertial-corrected by the carrier radar;
- programming mode, in which the carrier can programmatically correct the estimated target coordinates;
R-27AE radar seeker performance characteristics:
Length without fairing - 600 mm
Diameter - 200 mm
Weight without fairing - up to 14.5 kg
Target launch range (RCS - 5 sq. m) - up to 70 km
Target acquisition range (RCS - 5 sq. m) - 20 km
Radio correction channel range (MiG-29) - up to 50 km
Readiness time after 2-minute activation - 1.5 sec. The development and creation of the missiles was stopped due to the high cost and the creation of a cheaper R-77 missile.
The same aircraft that have the R-77 can carry these old missiles.
