History

The search for a modern tank destroyer for the Polish Armed Forces dates back to the Barakuda program, initiated in 2017. The primary objective was to replace the obsolete Soviet-era 9P133 tank destroyers based on the BRDM-2 chassis, whose combat value on the modern battlefield had dropped to near zero.

In early 2019, the Polish Armament Inspectorate revised the tactical requirements and revived the initiative under the cryptonym Ottokar Brzoza. The new guidelines explicitly demanded a tracked vehicle module armed with heavy ATGMs capable of destroying heavily armored threats and overcoming modern Active Protection Systems, specifically hard-kill variants.

During MSPO 2019, the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) presented three distinct conceptual demonstrators to illustrate the flexibility of the domestic defense industry in meeting the program’s requirements. While Configuration I used the heavy K9PL chassis and Configuration III utilized OBRUM’s UMPG platform, Configuration II was designed around a common, cost-effective platform - BWP-1

Many proposed variants for Ottokar Brzoza program

Developed as a joint initiative between Poznań-based Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne S.A. (WZM), PGZ, and the European missile consortium MBDA UK, the BWP-1 variant which was officialy authorized by MBDA, was proposed as the most economical and rapidly implementable option, taking advantage of the large fleet of existing BWP-1 hulls already in the Polish Army’s inventory.

Unlike other concepts, the BWP-1/Brimstone stood out as a preliminarily integrated, functional demonstrator. The original BWP-1 turret was completely removed and outfitted the rear chassis area with a specialized, hydraulically lifted box launcher containing 12 ready-to-fire MBDA Brimstone precision-guided missiles. The designers successfully optimized the setup to ensure the vehicle retained its amphibious capability.

The vehicle was fully networked with the Polish military’s standard Topaz Fire Control System integrated by WB Electronics, allowing it to seamlessly receive remote targeting data from external command and reconnaissance assets to engage enemy armor cooperatively. For self-defense, a ZSMU-1276 A3B remote weapon station armed with a 12.7 mm WKM-Bm heavy machine gun was fitted over the gunner’s position.

In May 2022, the Polish Armaments Group officially solidified its industrial strategy by forming the final PGZ-OTTOKAR Consortium alongside MBDA UK. On July 20, 2022, PGZ signed a monumental multi-billion PLN framework agreement to formally supply the upcoming battery fire modules. However, the tracked BWP-1 chassis was entirely dropped from the program the program in favor of modern 4x4 tactical wheeled platforms, specifically the Waran 4x4.

Ultimately, in late 2025, the Armament Agency officially terminated the framework agreement due to failure to meet the schedule. By early 2026, the Ministry of National Defence announced a complete reset of the program to relaunch the tank destroyer in a new form.
